Hello, thanks for your help!

I am a grad student that is apart of a special Master’s program that allows us to take medical school classes in the masters program. If we get accepted into the med school the 3 classes roll over. The matriculation rates have been rumored to have decreased over the past two years or so. Anyways, I’m considering not taking two out of the three classes because its not a guarantee and I want to be sure to do really well in my course loads. I want to conduct research instead and apply to osteopathic and allopathic schools. I could take the classes and stay an extra semester or I can graduate in December if I take 2 classes in the summer including research. If I take classes in the summer I will graduate in December but I’ll have to take out a private loan in the summer.

My questions are:

Do you think this is a good idea to not take the med school classes and graduate in December(saving 25,000 plus dollars plus having 2 semesters worth of research)?
Also, do you think taking private bank loans is worth it for the summer classes?

Thanks for your help.
Everything depends upon how many courses you've taken so far in the SMP, and how you've done. If you're in an SMP, research isn't going to help you. You need to show that the you of now is not the you of then.

I'm not sure but how does only taking two of three classes affect your full-time status for your loans? I also think that just substituting one class for research is going to have a marginal impact because most people are enrolled in SMP's because they want to show they can handle rigorous courseloads. I'm sorry if your concern about not having an automatic ticket to medical school is giving you second thoughts, but you should focus on doing well in your postbac program and getting the strongest application possible.
