  1. Pre-Medical
Hey guys. I need a little help. I am strongly considering applying to the
Caribbean medical schools but of coarse i first would like a little advice on whether or not im making the right decision. I graduated from Boston University with a 3.1 and got only a 21 on the MCAT. I have applied to a number of graduate of medical sciences programs and was planning on retaking the MCAT. I am now 23 and I am currently doing clinical work at Children's Hospital in Boston. I have done about 2 years work of volunteer work in College and now have completed my second year of clinical work. My question is, do you guys think that it would be worth it to do the medical masters program, get my GPA up, retake the MCAT and then wait a year to maybe get into medical school or do i just apply to AUC, St. James, St. George and Ross for the september semester? Also, if someone could just advise me on the pro's and con's of practicing medicine in the US with a degree from the caribbean i would greatly appreciate it. Thanks to all. 🙂

Oh and one last thing, I want to do Gen. Peds .
Thanks

I hear that there's no difference. Once you get a residency, you're set. And trust me, if you work hard, just as you would in a US Medical School, you're going to see results, and those results WILL get you a good if not great residency.

Not commenting on the quality of education from either US or caribbean schools which are probably both fine, but would say that it is much harder to get competitive residencies from caribbean schools than from US schools. I would say spend the extra time get the GPA up if you can and try to get at least around 30 on the MCAT if you can. The extra time spent now will help you out alot later when it comes to getting into a residency.

PS if you are sure you want to do pediatrics then you should be able to get in from the caribbean because it is not a competitive specialty. however somebody with more experience in this particular specialty should post more details for you. 🙂

You are 23 years old so you have a couple more years to push for US med schools.

Go ahead and retake the MCAT and take some upper level courses for GPA.

On the other hand, if you would prefer to start practicing and see nothing holding you back, even a Carib education, then apply. The worst thing that could happen is that you are accepted and you decline.

Thanks guys. I appreciate all the advice.
