Well I'm 38 and finally ready to take on Med school.
I started at 38 too. The uber most very super important thing: get A's from now on.
How not great? Your cumulative overall undergrad GPA is most important, and second most important is your cumulative science undergrad GPA. My opinion is that you need both of these numbers over 3.4 to try for MD school, and over 3.1 to try for DO school. You need both over 3.0 to get your money's worth out of any medical masters kind of program. People disagree with me on these numbers.
so was planning on retaking sciences at local Junior college. yes/no.
I say no. You want a squeaky clean new transcript that answers for past mistakes, and a CC transcript is not squeaky clean. Also note that retakes don't erase the old grade at MD schools. At DO schools retakes do erase the old grade.
As well as working as a Med Asst for a couple of years for some clinical exp.
If you have a better paying gig that offers some flexibility, do the better paying gig and just volunteer on the side. But otherwise working as an MA is great experience.
Is there one path that's better than another MD/DO
Can of worms. If your GPA/MCAT don't decide this for you, then you'll really want to do your homework. Premeds and individual physicians can't answer this for you. The osteo forum is helpful, practicing DOs are helpful, and people working in hospitals that have DOs are helpful.
should my sciences be taken at my 4 year State Univ Alma or is JC ok?
4 yr. Doesn't have to be your alma mater. You might find that a smaller/private school gives you more opportunities, access to professors (think letters of recommendation) and better odds for getting A's.
Or I heard Mickey D's is hiring. thanks for input.
Food and benefits, can't much argue with that lately.
Best of luck to you.
