Hi all..

I am a current applicant and still waiting to hear from my two beloved state schools. If it doesn't work out, I am gonna re-apply next year and also taking MCAT in august.

I am currently seeking some opportunities in clinical research. Can someone give me some idea what kind of things I might be doing in clinical research? Is it mostly data gathering, analysis? Are there actual patient interaction?

Hey 2DEG,

I currently do clinical research at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and wanted to let you know that it is a fantastic experience. In my position, I prepare consent agreements, screen for eligible patients, discuss the studies and enrollment to the prospective patients and their families, create resource materials, work on articles and aid in developing presentations for the staff in my division.

It is a nice combination of the data side of research (gathering data, entering it into computer programs) with patient contact. So not only will you learn tons of information that will definitely resurface in medical school but you can also develop your social skills with how you will interact with your patients when you talk with them about studies or just by observing a doctor working there doing it.

Hope this helped, good luck with your apps and if you don't get in on this round, clinical research is a great opportunity for the year before you enter medical school.

Thank you very much for your reply. This is exactly what I was looking for. I am excited about the possibility. I am hoping to start in May. This research will be in the area of stroke.

Even if I get into a med school this year, I am gonna try to engage in some research activities during med school.
