Hi guys. I was wondering what to say in my situation. I'll be meeting with a research PI this week and am interested in working with him. However, I also want to meet with others before I decide who to work with. After meeting with this first guy, how can I phrase my words so that I can give myself time to decide while also showing him I'm passionate about his research?

Please let me know what to say... thanks!

Dear Dr....

I am only interested in your research to get publications, if we don't publish I am "just wasting my time folks". "I am going to make medicine great again". Then again, I have to worry about the MOST IMPORTANT TEST I WILL EVER TAKE IN MY LIFE FOR THE MOST IMPORTANT 7 HOURS OF MY LIFE. This is far, far, far, far, far, far, far, far, far more important than pipetting in your lab or running an agarose gel for you. Honestly, can your tech just do the PCR, Westerns, and any cell culture/injections. And can you statistician just do the stats. I don't have time for this. Just put my name on the paper because it will be impressive to residency directors. In the mean time I am going to spend every waking moment of my life with Mr. Robbins and Mrs. Costanza, while annotating FA 3x from Uworld 4x reps. I hope this works for you.

Sincerely,

Med student.

Just tell him you were curious about his lab, and that you wanted to meet to talk about it and ask some questions, there's no reason to think you have to "commit" right there, most PI's know the deal.
