Hi, I'm shadowing an OD in private practice next week and I am very nervous and don't know what to ask, talk about or discuss while I am there. I have no idea what I am going to do while I am there and I want to at least have some questions stored up to get rid of any awkward moments. I am not great at keeping conversations going so I think it would be beter for me to have some stuff prepared just in case. Does anyone have any suggestions?

He is a very nice and open guy that really wants to help. I just want to try to impress him while I'm there so that maybe he will allow me to come back.

Thank you very much!!!!

I've shadowed my own OD several times and here are some of the questions I asked her while I shadowed her (idk if this was my first time or not but nonetheless I think they're pretty relevant questions):
-What optometry school did you attend and why?
-Why did you choose optometry? (I mean i'm sure you have your own personal reasons as I did..but just for curiosity's sake)
-What was your interview like before getting into optometry school? How was your undergraduate academic performance? (I thought these questions were good in case your feeling a little nervous about the competitiveness of your GPA or about the interview...it gives you hope lol)
-What was optometry school like for you?
-What is your daily schedule like during the week?
Those are just a few of the questions that I asked. Most of the time we were just talking conversationally...I also questioned her about the OAT. If the guy is really nice and open then it will probably be a little easier than what you think so don't be so nervous. And if all else fails just tell him that you're a little nervous about being placed in a new setting that you've never been in before but since you're so interested in the field then I'm sure you'll adapt easily. He'll more than likely give you information about optometry that you didn't even ask for and if he doesn't then just ask him is there anything else that he has in mind about preparing for optometry school! Hope that helped and Good Luck :xf:
