What to wear to a "working interview"?

Oh my gosh, i just got a call back from a vet clinic i applied to(for a kennel assistant) like 45 minutes ago and the doctor wants me to come in for a "working interview" in about two hours. She said id be paid for the evening. What is a "working interview"? And what should i wear? Im freaking out! 🙁

a working interview means you're hired for the day. During the day, the head techs will watch you do procedures and after the day is done they will evaluate your performance and decide whether you should be hired. Wear scrubs and good luck!

Personally, I would wear "work" khakis (ie cotton, not fancy), a decent shirt (ie polo shirt), and bring a scrub top to put over it. You could also bring scrub pants if you think you might have a chance to change. Practical shoes. But that's JMHO. Good luck on your interview!

At any working interview you should wear what is appropriate for the job being done. If you have scrubs that would be great. Otherwise I would just wear jeans and a shirt that I wouldn't mind getting dirty. It's not an office job!

i wouldnt bother with the "dress clothes underneath", i know it seems weird showing up in scrubs and not knowing if u should be dressy. but from my experience you REALLY fit in wearing scrubs and you look like you want to be hands on+ready for action. ive seen people come into our clinic with dress clothes and they are in for a surprise once they realize our vet doesnt care what they are wearing and he just wants them to be ready to work. i think since your vet specifically told you "working" interview...scrubs will be more appropriate. however, if you really feel weird about this the dress clothes underneath won't hurt you...it will just be less comfy and you may be less likely to be as hands on if things get messy

oooo ok, no scrubs haha.

i'd wear sports pants (because they dont attract fur, and you don't want to look like an animal yourself lol) and then a plain colored tshirt (no logo)

If you are really broke this isn't option but you may be able to pick up a cheap pair of scrubs at a uniform store (or even Walmart). Or if you have a Goodwill or thrift store near you check there as you may be able to piece something together for under $10.

I know it sucks to spend money before you even have a job but nothing will make you look more ready to work then dressed neatly (hair out of the way, minimal or no jewelry) in some scrubs.

If you can get them, scrubs, minimal jewelry/makeup, and hair up and out of the way.
If you can't, wear khakis and a plain t-shirt or polo shirt, and ditto all the above!

Have you been to this clinic before? I only ask because at some clinics in my hometown, techs wear khakis and button down shirts (with the hospital logo on them) - not scrubs. If you're going to be in front of clients, you probably need to have on similar clothes to the other techs/assistants.

At my clinic, we were very conservative in our scrubs - assistants wore navy blue, techs wore that bright green/blue color - no patterns, etc allowed. I'd definitely stick with a conservative color if you're going to go buy a pair of scrubs quickly.

every working interview i have ever been on, they provided me with scrubs from the clinic. i've never even had to bring my own. I just dressed casually to the interview and expected to at least get a scrub top there for the interview.

and-they dont always make you do stuff-especially if you haven't had too much experience, you can usually follow people around and watch what they do, ask questions, help where needed, etc. I think they're all a bit different..

Clean, conservative scrubs and sneakers or rubber soled clogs. You'll need scrubs eventually anyhow so you may as well buy a set now.

Speaking of scrubs.... at my clinic EVERYONE wears design/decorated tops usually with cute animals of all varieties because we are an exotic clinic. The only people who don't are the doctors because they dress up, and 1 male technician. In vet school does anyone wear cute scrub tops? or will i stick out like a first yr student? or even just a technician who isnt in the vet school?? Id hate to part with all my cute tops, but i def dont want to be to only one and i feel like most grad students ive seen all had plain tops. I will repost this Q somewhere else if i dont get enough vet students to respond here 🙂

wear what the clinc staff wears; some places that is scrubs, other places that is khaki/polo shirt. If you don't have scrubs, wear khaki/polo but be very prepared, and comfortble with the possibility of getting dirty. especially as a kennel assistant position.

Not gonna lie, I hate the cartoon-y type scrubs. JMHO, but I think they look unprofessional. We're not pediatric nurses after all. But yes, just my humble opinion. But to answer the question about type of scrubs you can wear in vet school, we were allowed to wear whatever kind of scrubs to anatomy labs and wet labs, but we have to wear ceil blue scrubs in clinics. Since you can never have too many anatomy scrubs, I'd say keep 'em.

I don't like them either. They remind me of something a little girl would wear. I looked for hours and hours online one day for scrubs with some sort of pattern/character on it and only found 1 out of like a thousand that I actually liked

I've got a Pooh Bear top, and I'm not ashamed to admit it 🙂 Hafta say, Pooh is looking a little raggedy lately though...he might have to retire soon :-(

Most of my others are either geometric patterns or basic designs or flowery type stuff. I've probably got 20 tops, lol.

Oh, and I've got a Scooby Doo halloween top!

I heart my scrubs, and will be devasted if I never get to wear them again.

I think I have maybe 2 or 3 solid colored scrub tops, and they never get worn.

I'm only in 1st year, so I'm not sure if there is a specific scrub dress code for clinics. I do know that all the folks I've seen wearing scrubs while I was emergency shadowing had on solid colored scrubs, and that some of the clinical rotations require non-scrubs (out at New Bolton, for example, dress code is khaki pants and a polo shirt...Or brown/khaki coveralls for food animal stuff.)

The cartoony scrubs are fine for any 1st year animal-handling labs and the anatomy lab, if you choose to go that route - I just wear a lab coat in anatomy (which they'll tell you that you have to buy - and you don't - I'd say over half of my class just wears a scrub top). I also had a friend that wore cartoon-y scrubs for the free vaccination clinic we offered over MLK day.

So, don't toss them, but I wouldn't expect to be able to wear them by the time 4th year rolls around! 🙂 There are plenty of places to get inexpensive, solid-colored scrubs...not that you'll need them for a while! I got an extra set from the medical bookstore a couple of weeks ago for less than $20.

well, im not ashamed of my patterned scrubs. my favorite part about wearing them is the reaction you get from clients. its amazing how a simple thing can put a smile on someones face 😀

I did have a hard time finding cute animal scrubs though, so i bought fabric at the store and my mom sewed my tops! i def wont throw them away until my own kids want to wear them haha but i will probably get some solid colors once im an upperclassman

I don't know if all schools are like this, but I think most are sort of "color coded". At VMRCVM the students all wear green scrubs, while the clinicians wear a light gray/blue. Techs wear navy blue(or their own scrubs from home). Students are required to buy green scrubs and are not allowed to wear any other color. I always assumed all schools have some sort of dress code!
