Hello all. I have been searching and viewing this forum for quite sometime and finally decided to post my questions.

I recently began shadowing my dentist and realized that I am not sure what to wear. This may sound silly, but the first time I shadowing I wore my work clothes (button up quarter length shirt and black pants.) As everyone is aware, the denitst wore scrubs as well as the staff. And EVERYONE was wearing tenis shoes.

So my question is, what would be appropriate attire for someone who is shadowing?

Also, when you are shadowing, do you basically just follow the dentist around? Or, do you check out what the dental hygienist and other staff members are doing? Maybe to get a feel of how exactly a dental office is run?

Thanks for any advice. I appreciate it!!

well..i wasn't so sure either and so when I called the first time to ask if i can shadow..i asked if the dentist had any preference... and he said whatever was fine. And so i just wore casual (with dress shoes) but it wasn't like a sweater and worn out jeans.... i wore somewhat dressed up... but it was with jeans.lol... so yea.. ask your dentist if he/she cares. The place i shadowed quite a while before required me to wear scrubs..and so they gave me extra scrubs to wear 😉 just ask your dentist...otherwise..just dress sensibly and appropriately... not too dressy though coz then you'll just feel uncomfortable....g'luck 👍

If everyone is wearing scrubs, wear scrubs.

I dressed professionally. Dress shirt, dress shoes, dress pants. It made me feel more professional and the dentist viewed me more positively. Plus, it helped the patients view me a little better.

Though I'd recommend whatever you decide to wear, DON'T wear jeans. That's just my 2 cents.

If it makes you feel better, get a pair of scrubs (Walmart) and wear those so you don't feel like you stick out so much.

Thanks everyone. I think I will ask my dentist what he prefers me to wear. It seems like the most logical thing to do. Thanks again!
