I'm going to visit a few AEGD/GPRs this summer...any advice on what to wear? Suit? Business casual?

I hope not a suit, because I don't have one 😳

Every one who is interviewed has a good chance. Many programs are learning that National Boards are not the greatest.... As you can check on my prior posts - why residents - it mentions what we look for.... As schools go to pass fail, and national boards go to pass fail, and you are only going to ask for recommendations from those who will give you good ones - THE ONLY LEFT IS YOU. You need to look professional for business meeting - not scrubs.

Biggest thing is YOU... and what have you done....

And the INTERVIEW, and another "definition" for PASS at the interview:

P - presentation - look professional, act professional
A - attitude - go in with a positive, pleasant personality
S - Skills - show a program why they should want you, interpersonal skills
S - Scholarship - of cause good grades help, but also extracurricular activities.

Good luck

This is a great question. A suit is what you'd need for an interview, to be sure. But for a site visit/externship, I'm not really sure. I would think that (for men) slacks, a collared shirt, and tie might be most appropriate. Any other opinions?

If I were gonna get into a knife fight, I'd bring a sword. If I were going to get into a gunfight, I'd bring a machine gun. If you're questioning it, I'd opt for the larger caliber. Please send your two pennies to: P.O. Box 411.

Frankly, buy a suit. Even if you don't need it at this moment, you will certainly need one for interviews and many other times during life.

I think a suit for an externship would be on the "too much" side. You are going to observe and if you're lucky, you might get dirty.
I think something along business casual (i.e. dress pants and shirt) with a whitecoat is fine. You'd just want to skip on the jeans-and-t-shirt look.

Good luck!

you could call the programs and ask what you should wear

I agree, but if the OP is going to interview for GPR/AEGD spots, he is going to need a suit anyway. I'm not even sure how he got this far in life without one.

wait...how do you not have a suit? didnt you wear one to your dental school interview? 😕

I did my dental school interview in dark jeans and a nice shirt. Looking back, maybe it was an "unwise" decision on my part but I was only 18! My mentality back then was: I'm not going to pretend to be something I am not or try to project the image of someone 5 yrs ahead of me.
Just yesterday, a woman asked me if I was shopping for (high-school) prom shoes... I'm getting my DMD next Sunday 🙄

Now, correct me if I am wrong (program directors, please do not hesitate) but how one presents him/herself at an interview does weight the overall outcome. That being said, I don't think a suit is the only way to go. You can look professional without going overboard (business casual).
In the end, I doubt that how you dress (Suit vs no suit) gets the biggest chunk in your evaluation. It's more how you come off as a person/candidate that counts.

To Dukie: Maybe he's the cool laid back type that stops at nice pants and dress shirt. Or maybe it's just my generation 😀

To the OP: If you get a suit, make sure it fits nice.

I completely agree that your personality is the most important; HOWEVER, on my interviews for endo programs, I did not see a single male who was not wearing a suit. You might be able to get away with a sport coat and tie, but anything less just displays a lack of respect for the process. Is it silly? Yes. But if you want in, you have to play the game. Program directors and instructors are looking for future residents who are professional. Showing up in a suit is part of being a medical professional.

Guess what guys, there are girls on the internet..and I happen to be one 😀
I had a suit for interviews but I returned it afterward because the stitching on the hem started to unravel. I decided on business casual, thanks for the input

A student emailed me a few weeks ago and asked if he could come by and visit my GPR program as he would be in town for that week. I told him sure, and we agreed upon a day and time. When I came back from lunch, he was waiting in the reception area, and my entire staff was snickering. He had arrived in shorts, tee shirt, and sandals. I was polite with him, showed him around a little, and let him speak to the current residents. When he left, one of my residents said " too bad, he was a nice guy". She knew this guy's presentation had done him in.
The students who visit us and appear very serious always dress for business, a suit. Those not as serious appear that way. Even my chief resident, who is the most laid back guy you would want to meet dresses appropriately at the appropriate time.
