At our school we have different presenters buy us lunch (usally pizza) and give a presentation (usually a cloaked sales pitch) and we call them "Lunch and learns". It's nice to get a free lunch, but the topics and presenters are often poor. So I was wondering if other schools do similar programs (through student body or ASDA) and if you have good presenters and topics? What topics do you have? Who are good presenters to get to come to talk? Any comments?

we had one last week and it was just the crest Oral-b rep giving us free stuff and telling us to sign up for dental care.com so we could buy their products at very reduced price. too bad you have to buy a whole case of it at a time. She did hook up a free triumph electric toothbrush to the whole class which i promptly sold on e-bay.

Here are some good topics for you:

1. Diabetes and Oral Care.
2. Oral Cancer Screening.
3. AHA Guidelines on Antibiotics Prophylaxis.
4. Mail Order Brides and Grooms.

Some other topics to complement the excellent list so far

- types of insurance you'll need (disability, mal-practice, etc) - find out who has the disability and/or malpractice policies for your school and they'll gladly send a rep to talk to your class)
- organized dentistry and what benefits it can have for you (I'm sure either a rep from your state dental society oe even the local component society would glady talk to your school)

Whatever topic you choose, don't bring Cerec in. Many people may disagree with me, but I think it's a waste of time to sit and hear the Cerec guy advertising how great the machine is. For newly grad dentist, you guys won't use the machine for a very long time.

I love LUNCH, not a big fan of the learn.

I would say anything that has to do with practice or money management would be good for students to learn. Especially if the presenter is a successful dentist and can share some insight into how they set up their practice and what good decisions they made early on that helped them.

This is what I think most dental students feel (including me most of the time). It seems like most people are interested in business aspects of future practice. I should have mentioned before that the reason that I am interested is because I am the person in charge at UMKC of scheduling people to come and be Lunch and Learn Presenters.

I think I'm going to look for entertaining and informative business people to talk about real life situations of running a practice.

In all seriousness, contact your state and/or local dental societies and ask if they know of either a dentist that fits this description or someone in the business field. If it's a dentist, particularly a younger dentist who went out and did a start up practice or a buy in situation that would likely provide a great deal of interest. Plus just about every state dental association budgets $$ each year for "new dentist recruitment" and this type of lunch and learn situation would qualify.

Dr. Jeff, would you like to come to Case? 😀

nice going.... mail order brides and grooms<g>

Many schools have presentation at lunch and learn from advanced programs...
We have given them on what do residencies look for... difference between GPR/AEGD... the individual programs.... OMS residency...

We have presented out of Maryland/PA/NJ/NY to Louisville and NC.... on what a residency looks for, what you should look for, questions to ask, and about our program....

most programs will do something like that

Specialty lunch and learns are the best IMO. I would rather sit and listen to cases given by an orthodontist about how he worked with an oral surgeon than to a financial consultant telling you how to stash your 'millions'. (A Temple lunch and learn last year). It was very interesting to see all the coordination going on between the two. There were a few cases presented about orthodontic preparation for a BSSO and genioplasty.

It was also interesting because the orthodontist told us what he liked and what he didn't like about each case. It was laid back yet we learned something because it was day to day stuff that probably got most of us interested us in dentistry in the first place.

I think Christiana Care has been out to Temple a few times too. All good stuff.

We have also had some lunch and learns about Temple Dental trips to the indigenous peoples of Haiti and Jamaica. During your last two years you can go on service trips to help those who have no access to care other than a witch doctor. These are interesting to watch, as the pictures are of classmates and other dental students.

Others we have had:
**ADEA product day - various vendors give away loot and you ask them if their laser is better than the other guys, etc.
**Loupes - orascoptic, Zeiss, Surgitel, Etc.
**Financial Planning - loans, credit, consolidation, buying practice, debt, etc.
**Practice Management - ??? I think I missed all these...
**Product people: new drills, apex locators, etc.

Hope that helps.

I think that these "lunch and learn" series are best benefited if the speakers are not from a company to advertise their products. These are nothing more than having a free lunch and listening to their sale pitch as a payback. I go to this all the time since I can get free CEs as well as a free lunch. However, be aware that these types of "lectures" are nothing more than advertisement sessions for their products. There is a big difference between attending a course and attending an advertisement presentation. DP
