I don't want to know "such and such song" or "anything by the such and suchs," just straight up what type of music you study to. 👍

BTW, "no music" is an option but let's keep "the television, etc" off.

Any U2 song.

Preferably "Pride" and "Where The Streets Have No Name"

Mozart and Haydn are ideal for me. I can't have any timpani drums or singing.

Classical music, preferably Tchaikovsky but really anything. Mostly since I got married since this is my husband's study music of choice, but I love it too. I used to study to no music at all. Music with words just distracts me, so I very rarely study to that (and then only when I'm not so into studying and looking for an excuse to not pay attention 😛).

Two of their best, although I'd never even consider listening to them while studying (singing/lyrics distracting).

I'm waiting for someone to pick Pantera and Metallica ...

yeah, I find singing/lyrics distracting when studying. I sometimes listen to musical scores from movies or classical. Actually, I should make a distinction... when "learning" something for the first time, I find singing/lyrics extremely distracting but when I'm simply "reviewing/studying" stuff that I already understand then I can listen to just about anything.

I love U2 but couldn't get ticket to their Dublin concert - so upset!

I usually listen to the Lord of the Rings Soundtracks while studying though any soundtrack will do.

I like to study to hip hop, preferably in a large cafe.
The more that's going on, both musically and around me, the better I can concentrate.

Well, The Edge's guitar is pretty hypnotic in those two selections... It's not like Vertigo or Sunday Bloody Sunday...

I usually listen to chill stuff while studying. I'm a big fan of jack johnson and the postal service.

I love Jack Johnson!! But I think the words would bother me while I'm studying - usually I can deal with noise as long as none of it is people speaking.

Wow, way to follow directions guys 🙄

And you're all going to be doctors someday?

indie rock and idm work for me, some rap here and there.

Oh finally someone with music taste that doesn't verge on pretense!! I love the above, adding BT, Armin van Buuren, Smashing Pumpkins, Peter Gabriel's The Passion (A must, check it out), STP, loads of alterna and much more. I love having music that I can sing with, it doesn't really bother me at all in terms of concentration. ****, with my iPod I can't even study without music anymore!

I am going to go against the norm here and say rock. I will listen to Jazz if I am having trouble focusing :0)

But, but, I really do like classical! Goes to show how hopelessly dorky I am 🙁

Not dorky. Some people really like classical music! I've always sort of liked it okay, but I married a guy who really loves it, so now after listening to classical a lot, I appreciate it so much more. Now, if asked what we listen to for fun when not studying, that would be a different question altogether! (I like older stuff -- Paul Simon, Beatles, Billy Joel, classic rock.)

I don't know if I have good taste, all I know is I love what I listen to, regardless of what others think. I listen and love at least a band from most genres of music, whether rap, rock, reggae, techno, pop. I hate limiting myself to only a few choices.

Since 2/3 of the respondants didnt follow directions, I will jump on the bandwagon and give some groups.

For the MCAT, it was almost always Norah Jones. Partially b/c its the only thing I could agree on with the person studying in the same room as me.

Othertimes, yes, Metallica, that one is probably my most common, with Ride the Lightning as their #1. Funny how I usually study to the same things.

Id say in order:
1. Metallica: Ride the Lightning
2. Norah Jones: Feels Like Home and Come Away with Me
3. Pink Floyd: The Wall
4. Led Zeppelin Flying Circus (boot)
5. soundtrack to Devdas
6. random Kazaa dloads.

I also listen to 80s crappy rock while studying, but I wont admit to that. Ooops.

bach
JS, that is.

See, that's what makes me dorky...I actually listen to classical for FUN! *Gasp* 😱 Probably cuz I'm a string player. It's pretty much all I have on my computer, plus oldies and 80s singles here and there. I've come to terms with my un-coolness. 👍

I really can't study to anything other than jazz, classical, or film scores. Of these, I prefer jazz.

I find with classical that my mind starts going all over the place. It's too complex a lot of times, which is why I have to stick with Baroque stuff. Which is fine by me, as it's some of my favorite. Polyphonic sacred choral music also a fav.

I don't know how some of you manage. I could see the techno/electronic stuff, as it's repetitive. But the other? Really?

I usually just study in silence. Or I'll go to Boarders, where they usually have jazz playing.

Depends of what I am doing:
Math/Physics: R&B, Rap, Classical.
But when I have to do a difficult problem

Life sciences: classical only
Verbal: None

garden state soundtrack, also postal service, shins, zero 7

Punk / pop-punk. I like my studying music fast with a lot of drums.

I agree with NPursuit. Classical is the only music I listen too. My favorites are Mendelssohn, Dvorak, and Tchaikovsky. However, I find them too emotional to study to. On the other hand, Baroque can have a maddening driving force and logic to it, like Bach's Well Tempered Clavier or some Vivaldi works.

So, I guess, purely classical like Mozart and Haydn would be best for studying, although by no means my favorite.

pretty much anything that has little to no lyrics. so to answer your question, this includes classical, industrial, IDM, ambient, acid house, synthpop, electronica, etc.

No music ... it's too distracting for me. 🙂

For those who are interested, this is where I get my music. I think the prices are pretty good. I wish they had a somewhat better selection. If you get on their mailing list, once a month they have special offers.

Blue Oyster Cult, on endless repeat.

I gotta have more cowbell!!! :horns:

electronic music (anything tiesto 😍 , and a lot of my own mixes), i guess i'll be a dumb doctor too...

Whoa! That place is pretty sweet.

I used to actually go to the library and just check out 3 or 4 cds while I was studying and just burn them there in the library. So I have a 350+ cd classical music collection. 😀

BMG Music Club is also pretty good for classical. You can average about $5 per cd.

its all about the jazz for studying. anything from miles to thelonius. i love it

🙂 Don't get me wrong, I listen to classical for fun too. But since it tends to be less distracting to me, I listen mostly when I'm studying. I have to be in the right mood to just randomly put it on. If I'm cleaning the apartment or cooking or something I either have on NPR (which actually is on about 20 hours a day here...right now it's Thistle and Shamrock, which is a cool program -- I like Irish music!) or else put on some Paul Simon or maybe classic rock. I like having something to sing to.

Re: jazz, I love Miles Davis but for some reason I generally only want to listen to him (or any jazz) when it's raining outside. Weird, huh. Actually, my music choices depend a lot on cues from my environment; I have to be in the right mindset for whatever music I put on.
