hey guys. i have a question about which undergrad i should attend if i want to study pharmacy.

I've been accepted into VCU, JMU, and George Mason. I am waiting for UVA and Virginia Tech.

If I decided to study pharmacy, what undergrad do you think is best for me if I wanted to go on a pre-pharmacy track? Are there any students that went to those schools that got into pharmacy school already?

I know VCU has a prepharmacy track and I read somewhere in a forum that MVC pharmacy likes students from JMU?

Help me out! It is too late for me to apply to any 6 years program 🙁 even though I think I am a good competitive candidate. Also, what are the chances of getting into pharmacy school after 2nd year of undergrad? I heard that it could take longer (7+) years.

Thanks!

I think it's too late to apply to 0-6 programs right now.

Go to the undergrad that you'll be happy at and cost you the least amount of money.

Go to VCU, because you stand a better chance of getting an early admit (before you complete your BS) from there than from other schools. If you do prepharm there, they'll know for sure what you've been taught because they'l know the syllabi and the professors.

I'm at VTech and I love it here! I just want to get out of here though 😛

I agree with eelo though. If you're going to go prepharm, go somewhere where there's actually a pharmacy school, as in VCU. I realized that I wanted to go into pharmacy after coming to Virginia Tech as a Biochemistry Major, and now I have to go through the process of having a higher possibly of being rejected from pharmacy school. T_T

and... JMU isn't really science oriented.

UVA is the toughest school, but I do not think that it would help you one bit applying for pharmacy when the pharmacy school is at VCU.

I say just go to VCU

thanks so much! everyone is so helpful on here - i love it! 😀

yeah i think i will go to VCU! THANKS! 🙂

does it even matter where you go to undergrad school? As long as you keep a good gpa and ec's it would look good right?

Hey there

From my understanding, it's harder to get into VCU's pharmay school if you do your undergrad there. Kinda weird, right? VT actually has a great affiliation with VCU if you wish to do your undergrad there. I found a website or link a long time ago explaining the pre-pharmacy track. I wish I could post it here so you can see for yourself. I do remember that you spend 3 years at Tech, apply to VCU, start pharmacy school and those credits can transfer to obtain your BS while your in pharmacy school. Jack Evans is the pre-pharmacy advisior for Biology majors. You may want to inquire how it all works. Also, ask what changes have been made since the prerequisites have changed for the incoming class since there is a new curriculum starting in the fall.

When I interviewed there, one of the P3 sat at our table for some small talk and asked where everyone went to school. I said Tech and he immediately said that his class is saturated with folks from VT.

I didn't do the pre-pharmacy track while I was there because it took me a while to figure out what I wanted to do. But I can say that Tech has a good reputation with VCU and they do prepare you well as Dean Reinders said.

Good luck with everything and wish you all the best.

you are correct. I am actually at VT on the 3 + 1 track, except for Biochemistry, and I will be starting my 3rd and hopefully final year at Virginia Tech this coming school year (2008-2009), so I will be applying to pharmacy school this coming Fall, and VCU is definitely a top choice.

My 2 cents and trying to not be biased toward VT... I would say UVA, VCU, VT would be the top 3 to consider with Mason coming in 4th. JMU is JMU and I never really liked the school, so i'm not really objective there. A degree from UVA is very strong for any major, so you will not go wrong with UVA for anything... VT is well respected and like others stated they have a very close relationship w/ VCU's pharmacy school and now offer the pre-pharmacy track to feed their program. I find it odd that it's harder for VCU undergrads to get into their school's pharmacy program and VCU is a good science school (biology and chemistry anyway) and will be in your favor when applying to the Pharm program. I'm not real familiar with GMU other than being in NOVA and a commuter school.

At the interview i attended, the applicants were mostly from VCU, UVA, VT, GMU. I do not recall any JMU students, but it was only 1 of many interview sessions, and then some from North Carolina schools and other smaller VA schools (ie Randolph Macon).

I don't think you'll go wrong with any of the schools and VCU pulls from all of them to fill their program. Also keep in mind would you want to be in a college town like UVA/VT/JMU or an urban setting like VCU or more of the commuter enviroment (akin to a community college feel) like GMU. That's important too and they are all state schools, so the price won't vary too greatly b/t them.

so now its between virginia tech and vcu? 🙁 but, i guess it adds up to which school gives me more aid but they are still in state.

=\ still so hard to decide. how do i start a poll? lol 😀

Well, I think UVA would be bad because you would be taking the classes with almost everyone who wants to go to MEDICAL SCHOOL and might think pharmacy is beneath them. And plus, I do not think that there are as many UVA students at VCU pharmacy school as VCU or Va. Tech.

George Mason? Ahh, for computer science but not pharmacy!!

I have a friend in the industrial/systems engineering program at UVA and now he wants to switch to NCSU, because the program at NCSU is more industry oriented while the program at UVA just stresses theoretical concepts to send people mostly to academia. This is for PhD.

So, visit each school and decide. It is MUCH more important to get high grades, pharmacy experience, and high PCAT ABOVE EVERYTHING ELSE!

If you have a 2.6 at UVA that will get you less points than a 3.6 at George Mason, for example.
