Hi Everyone,
I am a sophomore and planning to apply junior year, taking the MCAT this September (finished all pre-reqs and started self study).

My concern for next year and this summer is my EC's. I would basically like to know if they are enough and will be looked upon favorably as I am not very research oriented (I did not like it so much).

So far:

Orientation Leader (~80 hours)

Mentor for underprivileged youth (~80 hours)

Coordinator of Mentor program for underprivileged youth (~200 hours)

Research at a cancer institute (melanoma research) (4 months - ~100 hours)

Doctor shadowing : MD Internal (200 hours)

Doctor Shadowing: Cardio (40 hours)

Hospital volunteer: 40 hours so far

Founder and president of a youth mentor club for high school students in the area focusing on health care careers.

Things I am doing come next year:

Resident Assistant (i don't think I will put that on my app)

Global Health Brigade (we are forming through the club I started)

Continue Volunteering in the hospital.

Historical Research (with a fellowship)

Alternate spring Break

As you can see I really enjoy volunteering and plan on continuing. I am wondering if this is enough because I see so many students doing so much more and it is a bit daunting.
I am definitely not interested in pursuing research.
I should also note that i will be finishing my major next year (meaning I;m taking the maximum credits including upper level science courses).

so is this enough?

(thank you for responding 😀😍)

I would include the RA position as it shows you have people and problem solving skills. Your leadership experiences are excellent (four stars for you). Your have a lot of community service. You have more than enough shadowing. Your research is below average in length, but better than the 40% who do not have it on their application at all. You have mentoring/teaching experience. Your clinical exposure is not sufficient, but you know that and will build on it through the next year. Was the melanoma research clinical (with patient interaction) or bench research? You might consider additional clinical experience in another venue as well while you continue at the hospital. If your Global Briagade work takes you abroad that might be a way to do it. Overall, you're in good shape and I have no significant suggestions to make. Nicely done!

Thanks so much...i'm sighing out of relief now!
The melanoma research was bench work and i was accepted into Clinical Headache research at the hospital here but its still being reviewed by IRB...so who knows when that will come around. i will definitely work on finding another lab and looking to hospitals for clinical experience.
But thank you again! 😀

idk, your clinical exposure looks fine to me. plenty of shadowing and enough volunteering. i mean, by all means do more if it makes you happy, but as long as you have a good understanding of how medicine works, you should feel free to do whatever you're interested in
