I am a second year. I made it through last year with a couple of A's, a few B's, and a couple of C's for an overall GPA of 3.0. I have a feeling that this year I will make around a 3.0 again (since no matter how hard i study, I always end up with B's) which I am guessing will put me around the 60th percentile of the class. Everyone says first two years grades don't matter that much and that 3rd year grades are more important. But don't most people make B's in everthing in third year? At my school the attending's eval counts for 50% and the shelf counts for 50%. The attendings eval is usually around a low A or high B, so unless you make an A on the shelf, you are gonna get a B for the rotation. Is my thinking correct on this (about most people making B's their third year)? What fields can you go into with straight B's? I am pretty dismal about a class rank around 50-60%. I know Step I counts alot, but I think I'll score right around average. 😕

It's my understanding that first year grades matter the least, with step 2 being used as the true determinant of preclinical knowledge. I'm guessing that this is the reason schools can have pass/not pass preclinical years. Third year grades are the most important aspect of your residency app and do to a certain level reflect your knowledge from years one and two (although I've heard that you use about 3% of your preclinical knowledge during third year). Bottomline, you're in medical school, you're going to be a doctor, you can get to almost all specializations minus maybe the most competitive ones (derm, radiology, etc) from the third quintile. Pop a xanax and keep plugging away, you're going to be just fine!
