Why Psychiatry? If the PD asks during the interview?

Everyone's thoughts.....

There are plenty of 'short' answers. To provide a 'good' answer, tell the PD why you want to go into psychiatry.

You've held a long-standing interest in psychiatry, and your decision to enter the field was confirmed when you did your medical school rotations. You've found psychiatry to be the most intriguing, voluminous medical specialty with the most potential for growth.

OK, I'll be looking for *that* one come interview time...🙄

Hey, it's short and bulletproof....

I think at this point I'd rather hear that than some nonsense about how their aunt mary was a depressed borderline who killed the family dog in a jealous rage.

That only makes me worry about genetic loading...

Come on, sazi, I told you she was an aunt by marriage! And it was the neighbor's cat. Come on man, get it right! 😉

hey sshelby,

from the posters response, you might have imagined that the important thing is why you want to go into psych. if you don't know then maybe it's not for you. if you think you know, but have trouble voicing your thoughts- try to write down your thoughts and gradually refine them. also, try and schedule interviews so that the programs you are less thrilled about are first. that way you can see what "comes to you" and build on that in following interviews.

good luck 🙂
