What Will Be Your Dr. Name?

I know I am jumping the gun on this one...but I was thinking about it anyway.
When I was a substitute teacher, I had my students refer to me as Mr. Matt, simply because everyone butchered my last name on first attempt. That, and it sounded better than Mr. O.
So now I am thinking about how I want to be addressed as a doctor. If I go by Dr. Matt--it might seem unprofessional and I could even lose some trust from patients. It might also be a lot easier for pediatric patients to become familiar with, not to mention the rest of the staff of wherever it is I end up working.

I know this was probably annoying just to read...but what do you guys think?

I was wondering about that too. I am kinda hoping to be called Dr.(first name) instead of Dr. (Last Name). I have a feeling once you are an established doctor it will be fine..?

Hey, I was an elementary education major, and one of the weirdest things for me was to get used to people (the children) referring to me using Mr. and my last name. No one could pronounce my last name either, so most of the time I was Mr. R. This was weird at first, especially during student teaching when parents would call me this! But, after a while I got used to it and even began to like it.

So to answer your question, I think that being called by your first name may be a little too casual for your patients, but then again it may just depend on what your patients are like. Perhaps being called Dr. O is a good in-between because it is formal, but still makes it seem like your patients get to call you by a nickname so it's cool. Trust me, you will get used to it pretty quickly.

Just my opinion.

oh good! im glad im not alone. I felt kinda silly posting a thread about it, so its nice to see at least ONE other person has similar sentiments.
I would imagine someone with a more familiar last name such as "Smith" might have an easier decision.
But I also think about how some of my closest friends refer to me by my last name only...
just some things to prematurely think about..

Congrats on the Western Acceptance. I interviewed with you on oct. 2nd....i remember talking to you about how high the post interview acceptance rate is at COMP. I guess i didnt make the damn cut....atleast not yet or anytime soon. Anyway...i know a few docs that go by their first name i.e. Dr. Gina ....

anyway...i got my fingers crossed that Western comes through cause its my top choice and frankly, i dont have much else ...hah.....goodluck with the rest of the process.

haha Matty, if you go by Dr. O i wont be able to help but think of my ochem professor, who goes by Dr. O. He is a 65 year old very short japanese man with a thick accent....haha. He is awesome.

As for myself.... I kinda like Dr. Ryan and i dont think it should be a problem b/c Ryan can also be a last name.....what do you think?

I'm just going to go by my first name unless someone is a pain, then I'll drop the Doctor thing. Or Doc M will work.

You will probably go by dr _last name_ unless your patients and nurses start calling you dr _first name_.

I have a first name that always gets butchered since it is ethnic and contains letters that most Americans can't even pronounce. For years I considered changing it, but then something funny happened. People started getting used to it and getting it halfway right and I started getting used to the butchered version and didn't even notice when someone said it wrong (unless it was really really wrong). I think you will have your regular patients, hospital staff members, etc who will learn your name correctly and you will start to ignore the ones who mess it up. Also, you will find that your coworkers will correct the newbies for you before they even speak to you the first time. And, when you become a world famous doctor who goes on radio talk shows and Oprah, you will find that your name will become so recognized that it will never be an issue for you or your future generations again.

By the way, I gave my kids "regular" names in addition to their ethnic name.
