What will YOU do if you don't get in?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
1. Swear loudly and repeatedly
2. Drink
3. Cry (I get emotional when I drink)
4. Get Masters
5. Re-take MCAT
6. Apply again
7. Repeat as necessary.

Um, do I have to take the GRE? What are deadlines for masters? What could I get into with humble-ish stats? Am I too late? do i need to register for the GRE right away?

Improve my acting skills so I may star on a hospital drama posing as a surgeon without the quirks of a real life one.

The masters program I'm looking at will take MCAT scores instead of GRE (though I do have both). I'm not too sure on the deadlines, but I think they're in Feb-March. I need to start looking into these more carefully since I've yet to get an acceptance. I don't know about your current state, but you should probably start doing some research into schools to see what the individual requirements are.

Honestly, I would be very pissed off and try to contact every school I got rejected at for a reason why. I really dont know what else I can approve. Most likely, I could retake the MCAT and could probably score 3 points higher (I messed up on the PS, which was my best section), but I really dont know how much of a difference a 34 vs a 37 will make. In addition, since I am currently working at an Investment Bank, working 80-90 hr/weeks, trying to do both would probably be impossible for me.

I am also trying to figure out what I can do in my gap year. Most masters programs require two years. So if you are lucky and get accepted to medical school, you will have to drop out of your masters program. What a waste of money, don't you think? The one year masters are real expensive and are not that interesting. I am an EMT and so I can volunteer on the side, but I need to keep busy during the year and have something to talk about at possible interviews about this gap year. Is there a site out there for research possiblities for people with just bachelor degrees?

I applied last year. Two interviews and no acceptances! What did I do after? I applied a few master programs that accept MCAT. I don't want to take GRE!!!!! There are a number of one year master programs especially for premeds who don't get into med school yet. I got in UCLA master program. It is two year program with financing from TAing. It was perfect for me.

Now, I applied again. The only difference I've changed to my application this year was "master program" and "TA experience". I got in two great schools (that I did not apply last year).

I don't really care about money or reputation or anything like that. I just want to help disadvantaged people out. However, the problem with DO is that I need an actual recommendation from a DO. What am I going to do? I have never actually met one before.

I have no information about those other fields of study. I don't even know where I would begin to look. Would becoming a nurse or PA spell doom for my chances of becoming an MD? How much money do they cost and how long do they take?

If you're going to have to reapply next year for allopathic schools anyway, in the interim I would look up DO docs in your area and ask to shadow them for a few days. Then have them write you a letter of rec and also apply to osteopathic schools next year too...IF you would seriously consider DO, that is.

Congrats! And impressive restraint, 7 posts over two years. Where will you end up going? What was your master's in?

In the words of the late Aaliyah,

"And if at first you don’t succeed Then dust yourself off and try again"

That is what I am going to do because I think I am this close (ll) to getting in this year. So, I am not going to give up hope because I know medicine is my calling.
