Hey there SDN,

What would you do if you were in my shoes?
I am planning to apply next year on the first day June 1st. I am a Canadian so there is a disadvantage...
Im a fourth year student and planning to do a 5th year to boost my GPA.

Im guessing by the end of fourth year, I will have oGPA 3.3, sGPA 3.3, BCP GPA 3.0 (approximately)
I do have a solid ECS and research though: university hospital volunteer 100hrs, ortho, pedi, general dentist shadowing 100 hrs, research 400hrs (possibly a publication although like 7th author which is nothing but still good), community volunteer 100hrs,
I did take the DAT but did horribly...AA18 TS18 PAT22, (BIO 15, RC16) so with my low GPA I will have to retake it. I want to take it on July 1st to give myself 2 full months to prepare for it. I want to submit everything on June 1st and mention that I will be retaking the DAT.
How does this plan sound? is there anything I should change or do differently?
Also, how my academic updates can I have? for example, I want to take summer courses and also I am doing another year, so I want to update the marks for the summer courses and also the first semester of 5th year.

THanks!

Stat wise, the only thing your really can control now is your DAT score. In this case I think you'll need to retake it. The GPA is low, but I've heard of Canadians with similar grades get in eventually. Get your ECs sorted out, start shadowing if you havn't yet, and start to plan who you are going to ask for reference letters. Those will help the adcom gain a better understanding of you outside your GPA and DAT score.

Schools wise, apply broadly to all the Canadian-friendly ones I guess. I applied to ten this cycle as a Canadian, but there were more that I could have applied to for sure.

Good Luck

I think it is easier to score a killer DAT grade, then to retake a year of classes. Your gpa is okay, as long as you apply to many schools. Your RC is below the limits for most schools. If I were you, I would purchase all the DAT gmaterial around, and study hard for the DAT for 2 months then take it after your done with classes because you don't want your gpa to fall any more. Take the DAT ~ 15th of July and then have everything ready to submit. Yes, you won't be first batch, but your gpa will be unscathed and you would have had ample time to study for the DAT. GL.

agreed, kill the American Dat (whcih you can write almost anytime) and you should have a good chance at some schools.

thanks for all the responses

so do you recommend for me to submit all the documents on June 1st and let them know I will be retaking the DAT later in July?
OR
apply in july with the new scores?

Apply in June, make sure AADSAS has EVERYTHING before July, and retake in July. Thats what I did.
