Hey everyone!

I recently got accepted to South and I basically have 10 days to decide what to do and i have NO IDEA. I was originally going to reject the acceptance and apply to different schools next year which would basically put me as having 5 years of college left. This path would put me only at 3 years, which would be wonderful and all..BUT i dont really like South. There's no campus, its so weird. I'm sure its ok for people that live around the area but I'm from NJ and its gonna be totally different for me, especially with my coming from a campus environment. My advisor basically told me to go and that i may not be offered an opportunity to go to pharmacy school next year being that it seems to get more and more competitive every year. I'm also in a relationship right now so it's making my decision that much harder 🙁 What are everyone's opinions on this..should I suck it up and go with it or risk not going with the hopes i get into a different school next year for fall '07?

Thanks for all your opinions!

if you dont think you'll be happy, isn't that all you need to know?

as you've already applied once, you'll have experience over a lot of candidates who apply next year. you should already know what you need to do to become a more competitive applicant, and you wont have as many (if any) prereqs to worry about next app cycle, so though pools are becoming more competitive, you yourself have the ability to become more competitive.

all i'm saying is, don't pressure yourself into anything.

I'm a wuss and wouldn't chance not getting in again. You can always ask your girlfriend/boyfriend to come with you because you staying is the same thing as him/her coming with you. If you get what I'm saying.

don't go if it's going to make your life miserable for the next four years

I am dealing with the exact problem. I have 3 schools to choose from, however, none of the 3 is my first choice. I thought about staying for one more year but I can't deal with all the "what ifs" of the application cycle. If these 3 schools like me this year, will they choose me again next year? What if I don't get into ANY pharmacy schools next year, what will I do? It's a big commitment to decide on a pharmacy school because transfering pharmacy schools is not exactly an option. As of right now, I am leaning more towards choosing among my 3 accepted pharm schools simply because I am scared of the unpredicatability of the future. I can certainly understand how you feel but I just want to let you know that you are not alone.

smile~ 🙂

Do any of your schools allow you to defer till next year? I know some do.

i was originally deffered from south, mainly due to the fact that my fall grades hadnt been received. I have one class to finish over the summer before school would start in july which is MUSIC..wtf..haha. My boyfriend coming with me isn't really an option because he goes to school in PA (where I am right now at the same school and he needs to finish college too). He tells me I should go. My parents don't think I'll go because of him, but either way they support my decision because they know it was definitely not my #1 choice. I'm not sure if I'd be miserable because I will be doing what I really want to as a career and this is the final step, but im so indecisive. I should've went to Rutgers right out of high school, that is the part of the past that continues to haunt me every single day. I'm glad many of us are in this situation though, it makes me feel better in a way. Hopefully we can all help each other!

Thanks everyone!

GREAT POINT!!.. this forum has helped so much in the past 5 months or so. I know so much more now then i did when i first applied in december. Apply early and have experience. My grades are good but the experience I lacked kept me from being very competitive. Now that I know what to do the process would be a lot easier, depending on what I decide to do of course 😕

To be honest, I'm not really sure why anyone would apply to a school if they had no intentions of attending once they got accepted. Sure it's not your #1 choice and nobody wants to settle for less- but why even apply if you really don't want to go?
If I were you, I would definitely seize this opportunity to go to pharmacy school and finish. I have had friends in similar situations as you- getting into a school that they really didn't want to go to, so they'd decline and reapply. They all regretted their decision...
Applying to pharmacy school is becoming more and more competitive. I know some people who haven't been accepted anywhere after applying to a handful of schools. Just think- you'll have to write a totally new personal statement, possibly retake the PCATs, and send in even more money to pharmcas. Do you really want to go through that all over again without the comfort of knowing whether or not you'll get accepted by your first choice?
My two cents...

This is incorrect. South does in fact have a campus. It maybe small, okay very small, but it does have it's own campus. Think of it more as a commuter school like the local community college.

Sounds to me your looking for excuses not to go. I say don't go. There are many others (and I do mean many) that would like your spot at South that would appreciate the opportunity.

why would you apply again if you turned them down? That's just ******ed.

And if you don't get into any pharamcy school next year, it would be kind of funny.

Here's a hint that a lot of you pre-pharms will hate to read...

Most relationships going into pharmacy don't last. You will begin to find out eventually your significant other just don't understand you anymore. This is even more prevalent in long distance relationships.

Once again good points. My life was a little different when I applied to South (and all the other schools down south in the georgia/florida area). I was also unaware of the area south was in. I didn't know it was just 2 buildings when I first applied. The only way I found out about this was actually going there. I didn't HATE the school, it had many good qualities, I'm just not sure if its for me. However, you are DEFINITELY right about not wanting to go through the whole application process again. That may have made my decision for me, even though its gonna be hard. thank you so much. 🙂

You are probably right. I just wish and hope that I don't become as much of a sarcastic dingus as you during pharmacy school. 😡

 thanks for the compliment!

btw- If it didn't happen to me and many friends of mine, I wouldn't have said it.

I know somebody who met her boyfriend the day before she left for pharm school in Iowa from CA. She's now engaged and doing her rotations in CA. It isn't impossible =)

I needed that. That's pretty crazy! haha. Thanks for the hope!

i knew someone that was engaged in pharmacy school but then broke it off due to its rigorous schedule; the couple never got back together and she's my pharmacy manager, always complaining about how shes not married

I don't know why you would apply to a school you seemingly loathe, but competition is only going to increase for pharmacy school seats in the coming years.

My advice is to see if they will defer your admission until next year, that way you can apply to your schools of choice for next year with a sefety net. You will probably have to put down a deposit to hold your seat for the next year, but a small price to pay for security and peace of mind.

If they will not give you deferred admission, I would go this year, unless you really have super-duper credentials. But if you turn them down, I wouldn't expect them to admit you for a 2nd time if you re-apply the following year (unless like I mentioned, you are super-duper qualified).

You will have 4 years of a professional pharmacy program, but hopefully ~40 years of a professional pharmacy career. Which one would you rather sacrifice?

i would go to South.
since u applied to several schools this year, and this is the only school that accepts u, u should go. If u think u can improve ur stat tremendously by the time u re-apply next year, then u should defer their admission offer. Still, be aware that it's going go get harder and more competitive next year. Your stat may or many not improve, but the applicants pool will definitely be stronger.
whatever decision u make, just stick w/ it. don't look back & regret. good luck. 🙂

GO TO SOUTH!!!
3 year program = one less year of pharmacy school!!

Savannah downtown is one of the nicest places that I have been too.

My parents live in West Palm Beach Florida I go to school in NC and I ALWAYS stop there and visit the waterfront with the view of the suspension bridge to Tybee Island.

Savannah is one of the most picturesque places, kind of like the smaller coastal version of New Orleans.

p.s. I have seen the school. It is in a quaint moss-draped area.

Just go! Who cares about the campus atmosphere! You are here to get your degree and become a pharmacist! Period

I definitely agree with Caverject's point. If I were on an adcom and realized that you had been accepted before, but turned it down and were now applying again to my school, I would have some hard questions as to why.

I made my final decision last night, with the help of my mom, hehe. Both my parents thought I was gonna turn down the acceptance. They were kinda shocked when I said I was gonna go, haha. I didn't really get to see much of savannah except for the school and my hotel, but I've heard good things about it so might as well find out for myself. CDpiano definitely helped out a lot with the visual part haha. I'll be graduating at age 22, that's the point of it I keep looking at. Sounds like a plan to me.

Thanks for everyone's advice it was definitely helpful! 😍

yay! congrats!!!!! hope both school & relationship will work out for u. 🙂
now u can officially partay. 😀
