So I know some people will probably think this is a lame question, but I don't really care.

In one of my classes I have the option to not take the final if I'm happy with my grade. I have an A- and am leaning towards not taking it. Of course my logic is that I could end up lowering my grade if I do mediocre. I could also do well and boost my grade to an A. What would you do? (By the way it is not a pre-req).

Of course my logic is that I could end up getting a worse grade. I could also do well and boost my grade to an A. What would you do? (By the way it is not a pre-req).

What are the chances of you doing well and bumping your final grade to an A?

What's your GPA currently? If it's not borderline, I'd just skip the final. 🙄

Well, I've done well so far. But I heard she makes the final hard because she knows that all the slackers are going to end up having to take it. She often times has really subjective questions that one could only know by going to class etc.

I would not take the final unless you have a 4.0 cumulative gpa that you want to protect.

Take the final. Don't do mediocre. 🙂

Are you assuming that it could possibly lower your grade, or did the professor tell you that?

You should ask the professor if there is a chance that the test can actually lower your grade or if the test can only help you.

No disrespect, but if you have an A- in the class, which would mean you get around 90-93% average and the final is going to be a lot harder than the regular tests, what makes you think you will be able to score a 95+(the only scores that will actually bring you up to an A)? I'm not saying that it isn't possible, but probably just more work than it's worth.

Again, I don't mean to be rude, but I think it would be better to just skip it and call it a day.

If I had other classes that were boarderline, I would skip the final and focus on those. However, if your grade is solid in the other courses I would still go to the final.

Man, you are not giving us any information here. What is your semester like? Are you taking a lot of other courses? How are you doing in them? Do you need to rock a final on a different day to help your grade in another class? These are all important questions.

This is a vaiable option only if you are excelling in your other classes.

At my school, most of the finals that are optional can only help your grade and I don't have +/- system, so....if I were you, I wouldn't take it. Focus on your other finals and just move on with your life.

Thanks guys. I think I'm going to skip it.

I'm doing pretty good in my other classes, but i have a calc final that I would like to focus on more than this one.

I will check and see if the final can lower the grade. I was assuming it can, but who knows. It would be pretty lame if I took it and ended up lowering my grade to a B+ or something (I'm right on the edge).

From my experience optional finals can only help you not hurt you, but check with the professor. They are also usually a little easier than the unit exams and the curve a little more in your favor. If you have a harder more important exam the same or next day then I would def opt out. Or if it doesnt hurt your grade you can try taking it without studying for it (maybe a few hours before bed or something).
