As I make plans for a dream event and something I would have never dreamed about competing in I also ponder, what would I give up to go back 20 yrs but with my current knowledge.

Answer, I would give it all back. Every single bit of it.

What would you give?

You youngsters, please don’t waste your youth.

At 50+ yrs of age, I teeter on the best fitness of my life in order to do the things I love. But it isn’t easy. My only comment is, don’t waste your youth trying to get ahead. You have your golden years (50-70) to catch up.

More to come if this post takes off

Lots of people on here wouldn’t be able to drive if they went back 20 years. I’m happy where I am at, but I sure have made some dumb moves over the past 20 years.

It doesn’t work that way (obviously). Wanting to give it all away to go back for a do over implies regret. Do you really have regret being in “the best shape of your life” and approaching financial independence in your 50s? Your current situation in life is the culmination of all your previous decisions, both good and bad.

What you’re really asking for is more time. Time is your most valuable and completely finite asset. Your time allocation is a much more important consideration than portfolio allocation.

I do regret doing two residencies, though.

No regrets for me, even with all the mistakes of the past 20 years, I am satisfied with my journey. The mistakes made it more interesting and taught me a lot. It would be awesome to get to do it all over again just for the joy of experiencing it, but there is no need for a do over.

Part of me wishes I was born to rich parents, but then I think of the billions of people who weren't given the same opportunity as I have, and I count myself extremely fortunate.

I need to be more thankful for what I have instead of wishing for something else.

True. I have no regrets. Time is what I want. I don’t want to stop enjoying my life in the fashion that I have become accustom too. But as my body ages I am starting to see that I can’t do this forever and that is hard to swallow.

I think my point might be, set up yourself for success as early as you can but don’t put off the things you truly enjoy.

Baja 1000? Dakar Rally?? Come on, spill the beans.
Nope, neither of those.
Maybe later. It’s a year away.
It’s more like this stuff.

I would definitely like to have more time as a healthy young/middle aged adult... or at least go back and avoid injuries.

A great post.

But I have to say that some of the best experiences in my life have been doing things with my son who is a little boy, I wouldnt want to go back from that to see Paris, skydive, party, date around - those were what I thought I wanted when I was in my 20s...

we will always have wild dreams that we will probably not attain, and even if we do achieve our goals, we will always want the next thing - the key is to live in the now

This is a tough question to answer, and really verges on the darkly philosophical - particularly for the young. For instance, would you give your wife, parents, siblings, and children? Would you take 20 more years of life if it meant the loss of the connections with your loved ones?

As money goes... I'm a resident, so sure - I'd definitely sacrifice all that to go back to prepubescent years!

In the past few years I have come to take a hard look at life and I developed a list of things I want to do before I “age out” of these experiences. Unfortunately it took seeing some people go through horrible life events to realize that tomorrow isn’t promised. Good on Noyac for planning this new adventure, looking forward to seeing the updates.

I don’t think Noy is planning a new adventure. He has been living an adventure as long as I’ve known him.
I can certainly thank him for helping me prioritize certain aspects of my life. He’s a great life coach, super dude and one hell of an athlete who has pushed me so hard to the point of puking- literally.
Cherry Creek will always have that little memory Noy.
Good moto day tho.

I remember that bit in the movie. Most of us on this board haven't done so (Seized the day). Most of us have achieved our measure of success by playing it safe. study hard, work hard, don't make too many waves. Do I regret not taking more risks? Every day. But I also know that I would have regretted the consequences of taking those risks even more if they turned out badly.

Real good friend of mine died last November at the age of 56 from leukemia. He had been part time since his early thirties. 60% the last 20 years of his life. He had the best life. Always at the lake or Mountain biking/snowboarding/traveling. He was the guy that knew what days you were off and called you the night before...”so this is what we are doing tomorrow Sevo”...

He checked out early and we all miss him dearly... but in a way, we all think he cheated life by taking life by the nutsack and making the most of every second of his life.

We erected a bench in his name at the top of a single track he helped build.

You just never know.

20 years...*sigh* So many alternate paths that we all could have taken, I am sure. Reminds me of a meme I saw:

"The older you get, the more quiet you become. Life humbles you so deeply as you age. You realize how much nonsense you've wasted time on."

As I approach 50, I can't really complain much because everything that I have done has brought me to my present. I would have tweaked a few things, knowing what I know now, but who knows? My younger sister's best friend just passed away s/p heart transplant at the age of 44. One never knows when his or her number will be called.

I applaud those of you "living out loud" and maximizing that time with adventure. I will continue to seek to do the same and maintain my body, mind, and spirit until I no longer am able.

Cheers!

My group has a mandatory retirement age but honestly I’m not really looking forward to it. I like getting up and going to work. Maybe I’ve been brainwashed by too many episodes of Thomas the Tank Engine but I like being a useful engine.

Isnt mandatory retirement "age discrimination"?

Sounds like an open and shut case to me.

No, age is a reasonable factor for taking someone out of active duty, whether that's pilot in an airline, truck driver, or anesthesiologist.

It shouldn't be a factor for forced retirement out of a group however. You should be able to do non clinical work until you're senile. Whether or not that pays enough to justify you waking up for, it's up to you.

In our health system, the retirement from call age is 60. I don't know how strictly enforced that is, however, as our oldest MD is just now 58. I am the 5th most senior of 12 MDs and am in my late 40s. I guess we have a young group. I have seen the surgeons who are now employees of the hospital stop call at 60, however. I believe they could continue if they so desired, but that is up to individual discretion. And the ability to continue to practice competently.

I am happy that I was able to inspire you. I love tamarindo. I spent a week at Cabinas las Olas just outside of tamarindo a few years back and it was magic. Enjoy your month.

Spill it! What's the dream event? 🙂
I will inform you and whomever is interested once the details are finalized. As for now I am going to Spain in a few months to train and ride some. Oh and it’s with this guy, “moved to the private forum”.

Never stayed at Cabinas las Olas but got stranded there with the wife and friends about 15 years back. We went to Avallenas to surf and a storm came in and washed the road out. Walked up to the bar at Cabinas and drank for the afternoon. A friend of the bartender loaded us up into his jacked up 4x4 and plowed through the river to get us back to Tamarindo. I have some crazy stories from that trip overall. Love that area of CR; spent a lot of time in that country over the years and that area is the best.

Been to Pan Dulces? After seeing some recent pics, that place made my list.

Haven’t been that far south? I want to get down there and also hit up pavones. When I started going there many years ago the south was still very rural and was a 10 hour drive from San Jose or a super sketchy flight. Depending on your stance El Salvador is the place for right points; unfortunately it isn’t very safe right now. There was a brief period where it was a great place to visit. Nicaragua is another good location and Panama is holding some good surf.

That is about the exact experience we had. I told everyone I was certain I could get the Yaris rental car across the washed out road no problem. They basically took the keys from me. Probably a good move on their part. I drove that Yaris like a rally car around the country to Tamarindo and then down to Cabenas and nearly beat the group in the Jeep that drive the river/road. When I turned that Yaris in at the end of the trip I owed a few hundred dolls in damage repairs. But it was worth every penny. That bartender (if it’s the same guy) would serve us until 9pm then put a pen and paper on the bar and tell us to write down what we drank the rest of the night. The howling monkeys would wake us up every morning at 7am. Scared the piss out of us the first morning. I think we ate beans and rice every meal too.
If you look at the photos on site, that guy behind the bar is the guy I’m talking about.
