I have a sister who works full-time as research assistant and she says she can't make herself study and focus for the MCAT. She even says she can't make herself go to the library and instead she tries to study at home where she can't really study and ends up watching tv or going on social networks. She already failed the MCAT once (got a 503) because she never studied seriously. She took a break of about 6 months to recharge and in September she started again to study for it but without much success. Moreover, since two weeks ago she has been dating a new guy and as you can imagine she finds the time to go out with him and sleep at his place. She even traveled during the past weekends. She is the kind of person that says she will do a lot but ends up doing nothing of that. For example, she said for weeks she would go to the gym and follow a program that she bought online but in the end she only went once and then gave up. I feel like she want to go to medical school just for the prestige of it and because our parents have always been pushing her to become a physician.

What do you think about her? Do you think she will manage to pass the MCAT? I think she wants to get a 508 at least. She is a latina URM but I guess that won't improve much her chances to get into med school given her lack of discipline.

For people who got a score higher than 508 how much did you study?

You and your sister and your girlfriend seem to be in the same pickle. Maybe you can band together and help each other. That said, a lack of discipline does not bode well for success in medical school or in medical practice.
Glad I am not the only one who noticed the story has a changing cast of characters and they are probably all the same person :nono:

Hey there! Your sister sounds like my sister lol. But she managed to go from a 497 MCAT to 513 in 3 months by having a schedule.

What’s her GPA? Where did she go to undergrad and what’s her major? Some schools are known to grade harshly and some medical schools take that into account.

Lastly, tell her not to give up hope!

I was kind of similar. I kept pushing it back my junior year because I couldn’t focus and felt tired all the time. At my undergrad there was an exam or more weekly and plenty of work so I wasn’t used to studying long term for something. I eventually got over it by getting treated for depression and actually shadowing physicians for motivation.
Even so, there’s no way I could study for 3 months for the test. I studied around 4 weeks, going up to 12-14 hours per day in the last 11 days and I got a 521. YMMV, I did genuinely feel that the MCAT was largely easier than my coursework, minus psych since I took only 1 general class in it, so that probably helped.

A 503 isn’t “failing” the MCAT.

She can make her own decisions, and suffer her own consequences. You have to stop worrying about stuff she isn’t worried about.

Lol a 503 is the median for accepted DO students. Hardly “failing.”

You do you and quit worrying about your sister. When she wants to study, she'll study. If not, then she really doesn't want to be a doctor. Her choice, not yours.

A 503 will get her into nearly every DO school as well.

She is not interested in DO schools as they are not as prestigious as MD schools
"She's" not getting into MD schools..nor are you or you "girlfriend".

I read your post history. You're lucky you haven't been Bansmacked, but you are wasting our time. Ignore function activated.

I am really not joking guys. She doesn't really care about DO schools. I know that it is crazy but what can I say...

What do you mean?
Old classmate with that name. Fits the situation perfectly.
Masters degreeS. Low MCAT. Anxiety. 26yo Latina. Always travels. Parents pushing her to become a doc. Only MD.

Does she happen to live in OH? lol

My gosh this is like 99% my sister! But no she is not Alexa

What worries me is that she (my girlfriend) was very stressed during this period when she studied for the MCAT and now she attributes the low grade to that stress and anxiety. It just seems to me that she postpones everything until the last minute as if she is not very motivated to work towards it. I just wonder, knowing how hard MD school is, if she is taking the right career choice. I obviously do not want to interfere or put doubts in her but I am worried she may be making a mistake. What is your opinion?

The next year I will apply to medical school and I want to know if I need to improve my ECs.

My GPA is 3.5 and my first MCAT is 503. I will retake it in the next months though.

As for my ECs I have 1 year of research assistant full time work experience in a laboratory in a hospital (my current job) with one publication just published and hopefully others coming. In my job I also have to call the patients by phone and ask if they are feeling better and register some information about that or their symptoms. Sometimes, I also go with my boss around the hospital for the same reasons. I do not have any clinical volunteering experience but when I was in college I was part of a club that aimed at giving food to homeless people. I also volunteered at a few runs and similar events. I do not have any shadow experience.

Is this good enough for MD school? What should I improve to be competitive for mid-top tier schools?

We are getting played here, my friends.

So are you dating your sister? Or are you your sister? Or are you your girlfriend? Did all 3 of you take your MCAT on the same day? Is this a menage a trois gone wrong?
I don't see why it even matters who we are talking about.

Is she done with it? How did she end up doing?
Yup. She graduated a year ago. I think she did good as she improved her GPA and now it is 3.5. The only thing is that she would cram for every exam
