What you guys think about this

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I have no idea what your question is implying. Your question basically is, "What do you guys think about the number of people accepted vs. applied who identify themselves as black?" There's not much to say. Those are the numbers. I really hope you're not trying to inject race into this process, because this will quickly turn into a URM vs. Non URM thread.

no not at all , I'm an african american myself with , originally from east Africa , a friend of mine sent me those stats to cheer me up lol i was feeling pretty depressed and not in a good mood and almost changed majors , because i thought teh grades wouldnt be good enough , his advice was do your best and you might get in , because others have and he said being a minority does help in some cases , just avoid certain schools that you will absolutely have no shot at and apply to as many schools as you want
I'm really not trying to stir anything or start a meaningless thread , sorry if it comes across like that , my apologies

this is the grid for Asian

http://www.aamc.org/data/facts/2008/MCATGPAgridAsian.pdf

I arbitarily chose the GPA range of 3.4-3.6 and 30-32 MCAT

Asians have a 63% acceptance rate, where as blacks have a 92% acceptnace rate.

HOWEVER, keep in mind, that many Asians may apply dispoportionally to high tier schools, and also, take a look at those numbers

there are 102 black applicants at that score range
there are 1361 Asian applicants at that score range

I believe there are less Asian americans in the stats than black, yet there are around 13 times more applicants in that range

there are 24856 Asian applicants, and 9652 black applicants

Conclusion: it's obvious that african americans enjoy a boost in acceptance especially with marginal scores, but in light of just how few of them out there, I feel like we definitely need more minority physicians.

Thanks for your Reply , In conclusion i Guess some minorities have a better chance ( just do the work and apply and don't count on it a 100% you might get lucku ) I might get lucky , if anyone has a personal experience with this please share ( if possible) or just stories for classmates

Thanks Again👍👍

BTW.. asians are not URM...

so there is no comparison between asians chart and AA chart... and it is appropriate for AA's to have more acceptance rate because they have been internationally supressed for many years and the poverty rates in AA's in the US is very high too...

very unfortunate for the AA's to be have gone through such stuff... to make up for that little incentives like increased med school acceptance rates is very appropriate
