Are there current derm residents or practicing dermatologists who would care to share what you love about your field??? (besides the obvious -- lifestyle)
People love derm because:
-good lifestyle, no emergency, no stress
-good money
-patients are not complex and they don't die
-potentially have your own line of cosmetic products
-some cool surgical procedures (MOHS micrographic surgery)
-generally your patients are happy and appreciate your help
-easy to set up your own private practice
People don't love derm because:
-skin is boring
-high volume specialty, need to see 30-40 pts a day
-no medical detective type of work
-not much cool medical physiology
-If your family has questions about common things like hypertension, asthma or pneumonia, you may not feel comfortable answering them or prescribing them stuff
-unfortunately, some doctors and even patients still don't consider (or don't know) dermatologists as "real doctors"
