A few years back I read that Utah Valley State College (now Utah Valley University) was planning on opening up a DO program. Not sure if UUSM made sure it didn't happen or what.

Probably a nasty rumor...Utah already has a state supported school and is so strict about accepting almost exclusively residents (plus a few from Idaho, or those with strong ties) that they probably educate enough doctors. Furthermore, I suspect it would be cheaper for the state to expand the current medical school than open a new one. And lastly, UVSC needs real faculty before they can open a medical school, they can't cherry-pick from BYU and Utah forever.
My wife told me that she had an instructor (psych) that mentioned that in the class and that it was right before 9/11, which complicated things. This was the first time I had ever heard of that and wondered if he was clueless, but was still curious what the deal was about.

My Uncle, whom is a practicing Physician in Davis County, has told me numerous times that the school that just opened a pharm school in Salt Lake ( I believe South Jordan or West valley) has rumored that they will be opening a DO school in the next few years. The U does have a tight grasp on things but there is still a Doc shortage.
