What's a journal club?

Okay, this sounds stupid, but what is a journal club? Is it where you read scientific papers and meet to discuss them?

basically a bunch of people who decided that being in medical school was not quite geekish enough, so they have to create a group of uber geeks who argue about which journals are high impact or low impact, glorify or denigrate someone's research design, etc

Well, automaton is being a little harsh. For those of us who intend to do research in our careers, journal club is a way to learn how to do good/bad science. Usually, people take turns presenting a paper from a high-yield journal (Science, Nature, JBC, Cell,...) At first it might seem like people are being spiteful, but it's an important skill to learn to pick apart an article. That way, when our time comes around, we are aware of what type of experimental design is effective and what isn't. Its a great way to discuss science, breakthrough work, and get fed (most importantly! 🙂)

journal club is a place where phd geeks who barely speak english present scientific papers that they haven't even read, much less written. then other phd geeks, with even less command of the english language argue the merits of the research, etc.

and there's usually free soda.
