I've been seeing the term "Troll" lately and have even been called that a couple of times. I'm new to this site and honestly don't know what it means. Can someone enlighten me please?

In general, deliberately saying something stupid or inflammatory for the purpose of inciting a response.

On SDN, saying something disagreeable.

I find it hard to believe that you are posting on a specialized internet forum like SDN and you've never heard of the term "troll." Maybe I'm just paranoid though 😛

But if you're serious a troll is just someone who tries to angry people or get a reaction out of them on the internet. Sometimes they are funny but usually they're just annoying and unnecessary.

Because it's a scary thought that someone that could potentially be a doctor hasn't learned to use the internet.

What about the older folk who still don't know how to send emails that are already physicians ....

OP they live under a bridge, can be dolls but on SDN pretty much anything constitutes as trolling.

If they already are physicians they wouldn't apply to the category of people that is described as could potentially be a doctor, now would they?

I realize some of the older doctors are not well versed in the internet and new technology, and I understand that. Most of these people are getting closer and closer to retirement. They are also losing productivity with the new electronic systems, even the best of the best. I think there's already a pretty big inclination towards people that well educated in technology, and that may be an expectation of future physicians. Or I'd hope so. I know for a fact that many medical schools are already throwing the new systems at students to make sure they're prepared. Almost everything has gone electronic now.

Exceptionally clever trolls are actually quite smart and good at what they do.

Unlike this guy, what does this have to do with Pre-Medical Allopathic in any way shape or form?

Same here. I have been called a troll on numerous occasions and instead of responding to them, i just report the post.

You're not a troll, but you should put in 30 seconds of effort before starting new threads/making posts to avoid pissing people off. Same with the OP. Nothing pisses me off more than people who bother others with questions that could be very easily answered with five minutes of work. I suspect other people feel the same.

Edit: sometimes I wish the mods here are more like the ones on teamliquid. Pre-allo would be a lot cleaner.

I can sympathize with your annoyance of seeing the same questions being asked, but what I don't understand is why people respond to them in such a rude manner . No one is forcing you to reply, surely you could just ignore threads which you find offensive.

Except when they're like chill and are bad at starcraft but somehow get to be a commentator and have no people skills but somehow are entrusted with the power to abuse posters.

It doesn't justify the behavior, but when a person (say, the OP) has 5+ inane threads on the first page, it's understandable. For those of us that want to have or contribute to a useful tool and professional community, it can be very frustrating when people screw it up with this drivel. It is equally annoying that stuff like this doesn't get locked and deleted immediately.

I would appreciate that very much.

I feel like these threads would be dealt with more quickly, and I wouldn't be receiving a warning for something like quoting something that had the word "wang" in it. (Highlight it if you desire to read it, if you're offended easily don't, apparently it breaks TOS, fair warning)

I reported these threads a couple hours ago....

I feel like OP is a regular member using the guise of a new account to make a statement about how stupid and *****ic the pre-med forum has become. This should be professional discussion, not a place to ask questions you can find on your own. I doubt it will change unless the mods do something to decide that professionalism is a requirement - which, in all honesty, hurts nothing.
 
If we used the energy used to troll/respond to troll threads, we could probably rebuild africa.

Well the problem seems to be that mods step in only when the TOS are being directly violated. That's fair enough, but unfortunately they seem to be inconsistently enforced and/or narrowly defined such that most of the trash in pre-allo remains here. Especially during the summer, a majority of the threads have no place here.

How the **** is this thread not supposed to be here??? If the term " troll " is being applied on a specific network site.... Then why the **** would I waste time and google the stupid term???? People like to use the term so much but then wanna ***** And complain when a NEW person asks what it means??? You know, medicine is my dream and I'm certainly intelligent enough to learn everything but what I can't stand is stuck up pre-med/ medical students and even doctors. Come back down to earth....NOT everyone during undergrad had their mommies and daddies paying for everything, not everyone had a professor who understood and could relate to them. I couldn't stand stuck up, annoying, and shady pre-med students then and I can't stand stand them now. For all of you who ARE COMPASSIONATE and not just going in to medicine for an ego boost or to brag about how much hey accomplished, I hope you go far in life because being compassion is not something that is instilled in everyone especially stuck up and annoying people.
