I'm one of those who finds going to class VERY helpful. Nova has an attendance policy (though to be honest, I'm not sure it's actually enforced) but that's not why I go. I go because we really have some seriously awesoem teachers (and a lot of times they tell you to omit stuff for the tests!) plus, a lot of times the clinical aspects of what they talk about wont' be tested on our written exams but are very useful to learn/understand for the boards. My typical day first semester:
Class from either 8-12 or 9-12 This is the same T-F
Luncy (during which I'd study) 12-1 (T-Tr)
Monday afternoon: Test days, so we didn't have class. I would take this time to relax just unwind. Sometimes I'd go home and take a nap, sometiems I'd clean/run a few essential errands, but this was NOT the time for me to be productive/busy, it was time to enjoy myeslf. Once a month I'd go get a massage. Soemtimes I'd go to the beach or read a book, pretty much aything that was non-school. Then I'd come home and study for 2 hours (from about 4-7, while cooking/cleaning...so 2 hours of studying while broken up by cooking/cleaning). My friends/classmates would come over at 7:30 or 8 for dinner (either I cooked or one of them did). Strict ban on school stuff at dinner 🙂
Tuesday afternoon: I had OPP lab from 1-3. Honestly, sometimes it can be pretty boring, but other times (mostly) honestly, pretty cool. After lab I'd come home and unwind for a bit, then hit the books fror a few hours, normally not any more then 4 or maybe 6 (broken up)
Wednesday afternoons were really rough on me. I had histology lab from 1-3 and then CP lab from 3-5. By the time I got home I just wanted to chill out and NOT think about school. Which is exactly what I did. About 8:00 I'd sit down to study and get in about 4 hours before midnight. THen watch TV for an hour or so and go to bed.
Thursday afternoons were my productive days! I had anatomy lab 1-3 but I'd normally go in over lunch and power through the lab from like 12-1:30. So i'd be done just as my classmates were arriving. This was TOTALLY the way to go. I'd really start hitting the books hard for the test i was gonna have on the following monday. Maybe 6 hours or so of good study time. Then relaxing/seeing friends.
Friday afternoons I'm out at noon or I have IGC (shadowing a doc) if I'm out at noon, i'm out at...well...noon. If I have IGC I'm normally back here by about 5. Friday's were good, but not as productive as thursdays. Maybe 4 or so hours of studying then relaxing. By th eend of the week I'm kinda drained.
Saturdays: Sleep in! Run errands/do whatever, get in about 10 hours of studying total. Normally broken up by errands or some such.
Sundays: hit the books by about 11am, and have it as my goal tofinish by between 5 and 9, dependig on the subject. By 3:00 I will have shifted to "review mode" out of "learning stuff" mode. There's a difference 🙂
This semster I have one less lab (no histology) so I have a nice 3 hour break 12-3 on wednesdays, during which time I study so I don't really have to do much when I get home that night.
Everythign else seems to be pretty much the same, except some monday afternoons we have a class.
I have a life, I have friends, I even have *gasp* a boyfriend who I get to see occasionaly. There's a lot, but it's manageable. Going to class really helps (at least for me!).
