No music. I want everyone in the operating room (myself included) to focus.

If the music is on then I start wiggling and shimmying in inexplicable ways and next thing you know the whole room is bumping up and down.

A long time ago I was with a plastic surgeon who performed long cases (free flaps) and insisted on listening to a playlist that only contained like 5 songs. He would walk into every OR and set-up his speaker. I specifically remember 3 of the songs

PillowTalk by Zayn
7 Years olds
And a rap song where the only lyrics were "F*ck Trump"

He would then just play them on repeat through a 10+ hour case.

An anesthesiologist lost their mind about an hour into a muscle rotation at 11pm at night and we finally listened to something else.

The surgeon was actually pretty nice, but I felt like Pillowtalk played in my mind on repeat for about a month.

Back during residency, we were the only residency program at the hospital, so the hospital would have us scrub with any doc that needed/requested extra hands. As a result I covered a lot of spinal cases, which were their own special type of hell.

We had this particular neurosurgeon that I would guess was in his late 50's to early 60's and was quite the odd fella. To better set the scene, he was tall and rail thin, wore snake skin boots and flamboyant colored suits with fur coats, and would regularly bring a bag to the doctor's lounge to take every packaged snack home with him. Anyway, his hobby was writing and producing his own rap music. He was literally convinced he was gonna get picked up by a record label, and he would bring in his own music and sing/rap while working for the entire case. In between songs he would constantly ask if you liked the song or that particular track/beat. These cases would routinely last up to 6 hours. It was awful...

For a long time I thought it was just a hobby/act that he did. However, the first time I worked with him and pretended to show interest, he described to me how he knew someone, that knew Beyoncé and was going to get her one of his mix tapes. I started to chuckle at first, but he said this with more sincerity and belief in his eyes than anything I've ever said in my life. This Ivy league schooled neurosurgeon, would gleefully describe how he couldn't wait to stop practicing so he could just focus on making music. I left the OR that day convinced that he had a mental illness.

this is an insane story. there are a ton of high functioning people with mental illness in surgery/medicine though.

I can actually get through almost all of Bohemian Rhapsody before finishing a bunion…

But I have what I call Musical ADD. I struggle to listen to a single genre for hours at a time. My actual playlist will go from rock, to pop, to country, to rap, to slipknot, back to rock, then to alternative, a little reggae, etc. I can generally irritate everyone in the room at least once during a case with one song selection or another.

I usually listen to Modest Mouse during amps or the Strokes during elective cases.

I used to play bebop jazz like Miles Davis, Charlie Parker et al. but the nurses would start messing around (gabbing, not paying attention, etc.) like it was happy hour so now I just opt for no music.

When I was in college I was seeing a girl.
I wanted to go to a modest mouse show playing 2 blocks from my apartment and asked her to go with me.
She told me it was dirty hippy music and quickly lost interest in me.
Shes now a really well known general surgeon in an IVY league institution and im a lowly DPM

I guess she was right. I should have stopped with the hippy stuff years ago lol

Alternative conclusion - maybe you dodged a bullet?

80s/90s country. I prefer 50s/60/70 and hate 2000+ so it is a good in between. I can listen to Garth, Hank Jr, George Strait.

Would prefer Hank, George Jones, Johnny Cash, Faron Young, Roger Miller, Ernest Tubb, Patsy Cline, Tennessee Ernie Ford etc

Can't tell if you'd be either an Outlaw Country or Willie's Roadhouse listener on SXM...

I dunno being a rich house daddy doesnt sound too bad

Beat me to it. One of our OBs husband doesn’t work. Competes in competitive pistol shooting and rides mountain bikes. Annnnnd they still send kids to daycare so he doesn’t even watch them during the day most of the time. That’s living the dream.

Recently began listening to Elvis channel. But 59/58 is 95 percent of what I listen to. Can throw in the bluegrass station on a warm sunny day.

Wanted to go but they sold out in Austin before I got to it. Thought about driving up to Dallas for it but it was mid-week and 4 hours away. Saw them in San Antone back in the summer though on their regular tour and it’s always a good show.

They both offer different sides of the country spectrum without having to touch modern post-90’s pop country, so I appreciate them both. I named my dog Hank. 50% for Hank Williams and 50% for Hank Hill.

Try the Bakersfield Beat channel if you haven’t already. I recently added it in to the mix. It’s buried in the high number channels. Lots of Dwight Yoakam but also Merle, Buck Owens and some earlier Willie’s Roadhouse era artists.

Sept 4? I was there too!

Rage against the machine
Surprised (with your Qutswithfury nickname) you would be into a leftist/socialist/anarchist political band.

I had tickets to their show. Unfortunately Zack De La Rocha tore his achilles and scrubbed the rest of the tour.

Bucketlist band for me. Loved them back in high school.

yes love dwight yoakam and that channel. our pet turkey was named Hank. Had some chickens named Patsy Cluck, Loretta Hen, Dolly Carton amongst others. Also, I assume you have watched the 8 part or so Country Music documentary on PBS that came out a few years ago. Going to rewatch the first 6 episodes soon (everything up to the 90s)

Their music just rocks. Maybe don’t take a political stance on everything and be normal and just enjoy the music. I know that’s a lot to ask these days.

I hope this didn’t trigger you. Don’t cancel me.

lol. Just an observation. Odd fit.

I havent really listened to them too much since high school. But would pay to see them if they were playing around me.

Yep, I watched that documentary series a couple years ago. At the time, I was kinda dipping my toes into old school country. Always hated the pop country stuff but dug Willie Nelson, Cash and Hank Williams. Watching that series pushed me to dig a little bit deeper into some of the lesser known players and some of the history before the outlaw country movement in the 70's. Kinda realized late in life that country music isn't actually all the manufactured and polished modern country they play on the radio and TV these days. Plus the outlaw country ideology actually has alot of overlap with the punk rock music ideology I was into in my more formative years.

Said online 8% tendon left intact. Basically said (in his words) he may never perform or function normally again.

Thats obviously exaggerated. Worst case scenario turndown/V to Y with FHL transfer and hell be back in 3-6 months.

Having an opinion and getting your account almost deleted by the mods because you don’t agree with diabeticfootdr is not correct. Mods were in the wrong.

What else do you have for me?
Nothing.

Just dont cancel me.

Worst case scenario don’t do a damn thing with the Achilles and just transfer the FHL and they’ll still do ok.

Yes this a legitimate alternative but I would still try whatever I can to reconstruct the Achilles + an FHL transfer.

Same. Just emphasizing how surprisingly decent an isolated FHL transfer works if you’re trying to get in and out without doing a huge wack (such as on a patient that is a poor surgical candidate)

Did this on an 400lb lady. Tendon retracted 10ishcm proximally (plus whatever was horsetail) and about 45 days post injury.

Isolated FHL transfer. I thought it was going to fail/make her immobile.

3 months out she walked into my office like nothing ever happened. 5/5 plantarflexion strength and no pain.

Brought me flowers. I told her to take it easy for another 3 months to allow the FHL to hypertrophy a bit. She was doing heel raises to show me how good she was doing while I watched with straight fear in my eyes. I thought for sure that biotenodesis anchor was gonna fail.
