What's so bad about NYU?

I've heard a lot of people complain about this school...but I'm not really sure why. I've heard thigns ranging from, "it's okay, I went because it's the best school I got into..." to "It feltl ike high school while I was there" (from a md apps profile..)

i really liked it when i went. Bellevue is tremendous, the students seemed pretty chilled and indpendent (my kind of vibe) and the faculty seem to be quite supportive. They also have a ton of research and are right in the city. Am I missing something here? Please enlighten me.

Not that this is bad, but strange from most schools (I just noticed this today on MSAR). Only 50% of the class have done community service (I am really big on this, outreach, etc.) and only 1% of the class has a graduate degrees (which is rather low and makes me think its a young class).

Also they accept students with really high MCAT (35) which is comparable to a top 10 school, but NYU is top 30 (U.S. News Research Rankings). They only have one faculty interview and I have heard that the interview itself is unimpressive (less than 3 hours).

Again, these are not bad things, but are different...

interviews are less than 3 hours? I hope so! glad I never had any 3 hour interviews when i applied. But yeah, NYU classes are young and fresh from college w/o anytime off, generally. (not even a year off to take a break, which is very common).

yeah, being older i'm reluctant to apply there, even though my stats are on target. i think their average age is 23 and i think the oldest student was 32 (only a few years older than me). i've made the assumption that they're not too non-trad friendly and my app money may be better spent elsewhere.

the higher mcats relative to lower rankings is common to so many nyc (really, manhattan) schools. location, location, location.

i think their average was 33 anyway, but they accept a lot of top students who will most likely accept offers elsewhere. but is there anything else aside from not being non-traditional applicant friendly... ?

I'm also really interested in the answer to this. I liked the school a lot when I interviewed (mainly because of the clinical opportunities at Belleview). One thing my tour guide did say, though, was that the gossip flies because everybody is living together in a dorm. The dean also kept reminding us that their students are the top 10% based on MCAT/GPA. It just seemed unnecessary to keep fixating on that. But other than that, I thought everything about the school seemed great, so if anyone knows something I don't know, please post!
