anyone have any thoughts about why NYU is so special? I dont think a large class size and the most expensive tuition is very appealing....?

i know they have modern technolgies and its just a very large school, but what else is neat about them?

🙂

Hmm, it's in the city. You only get to be young once.

It's a large class. You meet a lot of people! 😀

People seem to be impressed with the school post-interview. It's NY and like DDSY said, "You only get to be young once." 😎

its a large class so people apply as a back up is what i have always thought

I know someone who is in first year at NYU from U of T. He said profs tell them that the average sleep for a student is 2-3 hrs a day at NYUCD. His schedule was something like : 8-5 classes, he stays 5-9 to work on some wax tooth - goes home studies till 4 A.M. sleeps 4-6 A.M. So it seems it is a really tough school. Maybe true for all schools, I don't know. Seems like death to me, I could never do something like this even for a day.

it is in a great part of the city.... but you will be engulfed in work... and its very expensive to live there.

A person'll die with 3hr sleep per day.

That student can get an extra 1-2 hrs of sleep if he just sleeps at school. No travel time.

I dont believe that for a second...

Well, its a great school in terms of clinical experience. New clinics and such and they keep their students BUSY.

Also, its in an AMAZING area of NYC.

The MAIN downside is its PRICE TAG AND COST OF LIVING.

As far as the large class size is concerned, they hire more instructors so they have basically the same teacher/student ratio as other schools.

I hate the NYU bashers on here. I would choose NYU over a bunch of other schools simply based on its location.

As far as size goes, it's like applying to undergrad. Big school has big stuff -- all the toys and tons of opportunities. You just have to expend a little more energy going out and finding your own way. Smaller school may be more intimate but is lacking in the fun glitz and glamor. I went to a small undergrad and a large (relatively) dental school is very appealing to me!

Don't believe the negatives on here though. Not a single one is true anymore. And because of where NYU has been (it did go through some bad stuff) the school is in that much more difficult a position to try and shine. Unlike some schools, NYU can't sit back and rest on its laurels -- it must be very progressive and I like that a lot!

I could go on. It's not my first choice (mostly because of cost) but I would go there in a heartbeat if it was an option.

NYU is tough, but all the professors so far have been fair. We're usually in class 8 to 5 monday-thursday, and 1/2 day on fridays (this schedule isn't 100% of the time).

The amount of study time after class is correlated to how motivated the individual is. Some are studying until midnight every night and they're getting A's (they're the gunners who will end up getting the specialty schools). I usually study about 2 to 3 hours every night and I'm passing everything (and that's really concerned about).

The price of the school is an issue: You will be in debt big time. Will it pay off? I believe it will (and the other 230 D1's do as well).

Good luck!

NYU isnt special, in fact when I interviewed there I felt the class size was enormous which gave it a very impersonal feel. Also the tuition is very high and they told us that they dont give full scholarships anymore. Also someone mentioned about it being technologically advanced....They are still paper-based for their patient files and they dont have digital radiography yet. Many schools that I went to were way more technologically advanced

its a huge class they and the area is only $2500 for a small ass studio apartment for a month, its the most expensive part of nyc so its expensive expensive. heh
