I don't think anyone is annoyed at you for dressing how you want to dress, but the fact is that wearing a tie when you're not required to is just, well, odd. Just like wearing a tux to class would be odd. People are going to wonder why you're dressing in a way that's not comfortable, convenient, or fashionable. If it makes you happy, though, keep doing it.
Edit: Aww, deleted.
Eh...I went to edit it and accidently deleted it. Whatever.
You're right...but ties can be pulled off per se casually/fashionably.
I might my gf (a nursing student) because she told me I looked like I jumped out of a jcrew catalog 😀
I'm an M1 and a 22 year old male.
I tend to "dress up" for class. I'm used to it. I wear things like usually dark khakis (never jeans to school), tucked polo shirts (if it's hot), dress shirts with ties under vneck and crewneck sweaters etc. I don't consider it "dressed up" like for a wedding and I choose "casual colors.
In general I just like to dress up, even going out to a grocery store or for a walk I would never wear unfitted jeans and unfitted t-shirts like a boy or even gym shorts.
I've always dressed like this. People say it's "classy or I look like I jumped out of a banana republic/j crew/nordstrom catalog" but I don't care.
People dress differently that's cool but I just can not bring myself to show up to lecture in sweats, gyms shorts ,jeans and a tshirt like other people.
I thought it would go away (it happened in undergrad) in medical school....but people ask me "why are you dressed up etc".....I can tell some people even see me as some sort of gunner etc...which I'm not.
What is it these days that guys in particular are expected by societly to dress down as much as possible? So what if people want to look nice for class? Maybe it's respect to Profs. or rebelling against the trend of guys to dress down, etc
"I look like I jumped out of a banana republic/j crew/nordstrom catalog"
Serious narcissism right here.
a skinny tie over a teeshirt with a hoodie over a nice brooks brothers suit jacket with $300 seven for all mankind jeans and $400 dress shoes are the only way i roll. 😎
As a female, I would be much more attracted to a guy who dressed how you described over any guy who refuses to be in anything but sweatpants, T shirts, or gym clothes. The people who are bothered by what other people wear are just expressing their own insecurity over how they dress. If they really didn't care, they wouldn't care.
I actually worked at J.Crew so I'm probably better looking than everyone on this forum. ... then got fired.
Can't imagine why you'd want to dress up for class (or even consistently go to class..?), but hey, whatever floats your boat. As long as you're not douchey about it.
Eh. I wear ties and make them subtle means to complete outfits (under thin crewneck/vneck sweaters etc).Who da f.uck wears ties to class? You realize that you're sitting in a smelly basement with 100-200 other people as some random old douchebag blathers away for hours on end? Wake up son!
I'm willing to bet you that 40 of my $1 Fruit of the Loom undershirts will outlast one of anything you have in your closet that costs the same or more. 😉Dress shirts are much more cost effective investements....you can dress up/down with them...and they fabrics are stronger and last long if you take good care of them.
Sure you do. Everyone who isn't antisocial does to some extent. If everyone thought you were a freak for dressing up and let you know it, I'd say it's an even safer bet than my redneck challenge above that you'd stop dressing as you are.I don't care what others think
I doubt anyone will think you're a gunner, but they'll probably think you're wasting you time and are at least a little strange.if they think I'm a "gunner" then they can get to know me and see that I'm not

I'm never going to stop dressing how I feel.
I don't have any tshirts. Dress shirts are much more cost effective investements....you can dress up/down with them...and they fabrics are stronger and last long if you take good care of them.
I agree with what someone else said...I don't care what others think....if they think I'm a "gunner" then they can get to know me and see that I'm not....then again my outfits aren't "nerdy" or anything...
The most casual thing I can bring myself to wear is jeans and a properly fitted polo short (never to class)....maybe shorts if it's really hot outside...but I would never wear shorts to class/professor meeting
I just don't want to dress down for classs
I think it is human nature to just do what everyone else is doing.I do something that isn't normal. Why do people think I'm weird?
Thats not true. I don't really think people are bothered by the OP dressing up, but I think they're curious as to why.
We have people who dress up full blown suit + tie just to take the shelf exams (when there is absolutely no dress code at all). Do I care/does it affect my exam performance? Absolutely not. Am I curious as to why said individuals do that? Yes I am, because I think it's odd.
As was said above, it almost seems like you have something to prove by dressing up everyday. Is it a statement of status/prestige/being stuck up?

Medical school is a lot like high school.
Lots of gossip, but since people are generally more spread out and see each other less, Ive seen less drama.Yeah, definitely have seen plenty of that in the first half. Did it get worse in M3/M4?
