what worked best for you for both the actual class in med school and for the boards?

micro made ridiculously easy? BRS? let me know.

In class, I used the class notes plus a textbook to clarify (mostly memorable for the more gruesome pictures) during M-1, then heavily used BRS along with class notes for the infectious disease pathophysiology module of M-2 pathophys.

For step 1, I used BRS (having already read it during M-2). Micro/ID was my best subject and I loved BRS. That said, most people hate BRS Micro. Clinical Micro Made Ridiculously Simple is pretty popular, though.

I have heard from upperclassman and SDN that Micro made ridiculously simple is a really good book for both class and the boards.

microbio made ridiculously simple

easy reading, lots of information.
however, for the boards, the book has more info than needed, but it is still useful as a resource

MRS is a good book and if you can get a hold of a copy of the Kaplan notes Micro/Immuno book they do a good job with comparisons and have several tables with patient descriptions, signs, symptoms, age groups, epidemiology etc... The questions in the Kaplan book are pretty good IMO as well.

i know the question was which book would fit both class and the boards, but for the boards first aid is enough. i did not spend any time on MMRS for the boards, and i'm glad i didn't because first aid micro was a time-saver.

For the best overall review of Micro and Immuno, I stick with:

Medical Micro and Immuno by Levinson and Jawetz (by Lange).

but MMRS is probably the best book for integrating stuff and mnemonics and whatnot.

Also, HY Micro has a fantastic clinical vignette section where you can quiz yourself. It is ultra high yield and I loved this book, though I used MMMRS (I read it twice) as well.

Lange is a great book to use for reference during the course and to study for the nit picky details of course exams. However, it waaay overkill for the boards.

For the boards read MMRS and put the stuff from there into your First Aid. After that just use your annotated FA for review.

I love all the ridiculously simple books. I keep buying them. They're all really well written.

I've seen the Micro ridiculously simple on almost all the old USMLE writer's websites. Everyone seems to love it.

So you guys think that most textbooks would be overkill for the boards? Our school is using Sherris Medical Microbiology : An Introduction to Infectious Diseases, and I like it as far as the course is concerned, but I was just wondering if I should get the other "review" books mentioned as well.
