I have posted this before, but not even one response...but now I really need to know because I have a family member thinking of applying to UNC next year.

I do not know a thing about the program except that they are the only school with "Accreditation Status: Approval with Reporting Requirements"

Why?

Do I tell my cuz do not worry about this and go if you are accepted or do I say you need to do some major sniffing should you get an interview and an acceptance.

"Approval (with reporting requirements): An accreditation classification granted to an educational program indicating that specific deficiencies or weaknesses exist in one or more areas of the program. Evidence of compliance with the cited standards must be demonstrated within 18 months if the program is between one and two years in length or two years if the program is at least two years in length. If the deficiencies are not corrected within the specified time period, accreditation will be withdrawn, unless the Commission extends the period for achieving compliance for good cause."

I wouldn't worry about it. If he applies here and wants to attend, it is an excellent school and he will get an excellent education.

Bascically the ADA felt we needed more competency exams. It wasn't enough to them that we have to do 470 operative points to graduate, they wanted actual competencies as well. For example, we now have to do certain procedure from start to finish with no facutly input to simulate private practice for a grade. It's been added in operative and perio, as well as another module they are working on to test clinical skills. Once they are taken care of teh ADA will remove those statements. It all stems from the lack of competency exams, which has already changed. I know because my class is the guinea pigs for everything (class of 2006...3rd year).

As far as your family member coming here, I think it's a wonderful school. If they can get into UNC, which is no easy feat, they should seriously consider attending. Our clinical experience is as good and better than just about everywhere in my opinion because we actually get into clinics and start doing real work earlier than anywhere. If research is your thing, it would take me all night to talk about the multitude of research available here.

I'm sure there will be a few of my classmates who are very involved at school who can further explain things if need be.

Tarheel why PM the answer...it is a legit question and it would be valuable for anyone interested in the school to get an answer.

Thanks

I'm sure others will appreciate your response
