A retrospective cohort evaluates a group with some exposure versus a group without the exposure, then compares the outcomes (or some disease, etc).
A case control study identifies a group with some outcome (or disease) and a control group without the disease, then compares exposures.
So a retrospective cohort would have a group of smokers and a group of non-smokers, then look for outcomes of lung disease in the groups.
A case control study would have a group with lung disease (case) and a group without lung disease (control) and look to identify smokers (exposure) in the groups.
