Whats the difference between Manic Depression & just Depression?

Hi, I will be entering med school next year and I wanted to ask this to the experts out there.

In short: depression is a flat mood, feeling down, decreased energy etc.
manic depression (also known as bipolar disorder) is episodes of the above feeling combined witha t least one episode of feeling 'high', expansive, disinhibited to the point where it interferes with the patients life...
