I recently came across the opportunity to work part-time for a hospital while still working full-time at retail. The hours come out to be 52 max, but average is 50 hours. So I'd be bringing home an additional ~2500/mo after taxes. Not really doing it for the money, just interested in having the flexibility and security to do something different and learn.

Is 50 hours too much?

Thanks

most people I know that do part time jobs rack in 60-70 hrs a week so no. I do OT at work and work 47-50 hours a week sometimes

If I was in similar circumstances, I would totally do 70 -75 hours. Cash in as much as I could, especially when I have the energy to do so right out of college. I know people who work 7 off 7 on and have a part time job so no 50 hours is not too bad... definitely doable.

The only people who get to do 70+h/week are graveyard pharmacists. Once you start pushing north of 70h, you don't have a life (working 10h/day everyday with no days off).

Pharmacist who work during the day time normally do not have such privilege because they work at least 4-5 days in a week and only leave 1-2 days/week to do part time (instead of 7 days off working graveyard (7 extra days to do part time).

The majority of pharmacists DO NOT work graveyard, so they can't really do 70h/week. Around 50-55 hours/week is what I would aim if you work daytime. You will probably still have 1-2 days off to have a life.

Yeah, if you work full time in any kind of normal schedule (eg, 8-4:30 mo-fr) type, it's hard to take on more than 1 extra shift, so 50 hr/week. If you do double shift during the week, trying to get back to work less than 8 hours after you left feels like hell, and working weekends cut into family time. I try to keep PRN work to one weekend per month, and these 12 day stretches do feel long. Money is nice but there comes a point when you got too little time to enjoy it and you decide it's just not worth it. Young singles can go all out on hours for a year or two, but everyone will eventually burn out or tied down by family.

I'm a graveyard RPh and work 7 days on, then my 7 days off I pick up shifts for almost every day except 1 or 2. The most I worked was 150 hours biweekly (which was 75 hours each week) and I did that for just a month and a half. When you go 70+ per week, you have no life. No time for friends, no time for family, no time for yourself. It's not worth it in my opinion.

I prefer the term "night-shift" and not "graveyard" 🙂

Yes, I work 70 hours/week, every other week. And I absolutely never pick up OT on my week off. They would honestly have to pay me ~100/hour to even consider it, and I probably still wouldn't do it. I find that I do have time to go on a walk, bike ride, surf the web, watch tv during my work week but that's about it. If its a holiday or something I can make arrangements to travel to family if they are within 30 minutes or so for a holiday dinner but typically you just don't want to do much while working.

I could never imagine someone working 60-70 hours/week every week. It would be life draining and not worth it imo. The benefits of pharmacy is that we make upper/middle class incomes while we are still in our 20s'.
