1. Get a good undergrad GPA
2. Write the DAT
3. Get accepted to a Dental school
4. Get your degree and write the board exams

is that it?

is there a residency? if so, when does that happen?

how many years does it take to become a dentist in USA/Canada?

Residency is optional (done after you graduate). It normally takes 4 years to graduate dental school (although a couple of schools have 3 year programs).

"Write the DAT", you must be Canadian. Pathway to becoming a dentist is as simple as you laid it out, get in dental school and get out. Residency is optional if you wish to increase speed, confidence or maybe do more advanced cases (in some programs), or specialize. Although getting through in dental school is a lot of work, and getting through is no picnic either.

Where is residency usually taken place at? Public clinic? Is it recommended to do residency? I'd imagine they pay min wage? How many years is the residency program?

In Canada, it takes 4 years to complete every dental school I've checked into. Most prefer a 4 year undergrad to be completed before entering but some will accept you after 3 years.
