What's the Proper Etiquette?

School's Alumni association is having a gathering to welcome incoming students at an alum's home, physician and their spouse. Professors, other alum, and school's admissions staff will also be attending.

Would it be proper to bring a small gift like a bottle of wine? Any other suggestions? Trying to not come off as pompous if bringing something is not appropriate.
