What's the rule of thumb for graduating early and applying to Med School?

Hey, I'm new to SDN and I was wondering if anybody knew what the rule was in terms of graduating early? I'm currently a rising junior (technically senior) and I'm able to graduate as a Biology/English double-major by the end of next year. I've spoken to some medical students who graduated early ( by one semester), and they told me that while they got in, it is better to graduate on time. I've heard conflicting information about this and I'm just wondering if graduating a year early is worth it or sticking around for another year would be better?? I'm also at the point where I have already started on the track to gaining a minor in Chem, which could expand into another major. Also (sorry for all of the questions!), would it be beneficial to have all of these majors and a minor for admissions? I'm completing the Biology/English double-major because I love both equally, but it's always a thought that keeps floating around my head. Thanks for any and all advice! 🙂

From my understanding finishing early will not help you. The only way it could hurt you is if admissions committees feel like you are too young and do not have enough experience to be admitted to medical school at your current age and maturity level. You'll probably be fine but remember the average age of matriculation is 26 so people do take their good sweet time and don't hesitate to do so yourself. You only get to be young once!

Thanks!! You really helped me out there!! I think I might keep chem a minor though and enjoy my senior year. Well, as much as possible anyways 😛

Agree with ChemEngMD. It's not about the speed at which you complete college. They are looking for a decent level of maturity that comes with age and experience.

Of course they are also looking for a compelling story for why you want to go into medicine, and good stats (GPA, MCAT), strong LORs, etc.

I wouldn't rush to graduate from college. I can't really think of a benefit to doing this except maybe saving money on college tuition.

Good luck!
