I know PCO has an extensive clinical experience available to its students. As a perspective student, what is in store for me during my third and fourth years at PCO? Is it possible to select externship sites located close to home to save on room and board expenses or would I have to remain in the Elkins Park area(which tends to be a bit pricey for apartments)? What type of externships must a student complete during this time period and what requirements must a site have to qualify to fulfill these requirements. Thanks in advance to any present PCO students or recent grads. who are willing to give me some insight in this area!🙂

18 months out of campus clinic rotations, you do choose some areas, and there is a lottery involved in it. dont know exactly every detail.

I think this is a great question. Anyone else have input?

I am in my third year at PCO. During the second year and beginning of third we mainly see patients at The Eye Institute in Philadelphia. We see a lot of patients with pathology, diabetes, glaucoma. In the second half of the third year we begin a five month externship, followed by 4 3-month externships in the 4th year. These 4th year rotations include a hospital site, a disease site and a contact lens site. For one quarter in the 4th year, you have to be at The Eye Institute, for the rest you can go pretty much anywhere. Sites are available throughout the country.

The list of sites vary, and there'll never be enough sites to please everyone. That's probably the case for other schools, but you make due with what you have to choose from.
