Yeah its SDN and every-other person here has a 4.0 blah blah ..okay not everyone but you get the idea.

But Post what you think separated you from other dental school applicants in terms of extra-circular activities when you were/are applying or what were/are some of the extra-circular activities you have participated in outside of school or through your school.

Don't ask other people to introduce themselves when you haven't done so first 🙄

president of college wide honor society, vice president of group that goes to 3rd world countries, intern at public health department, research out of the wazoo. anything that has some sort of leadership involved looks really good.

-Academic Officer of Pre-Medical Organization for Minority Students at my school.
-Research participation in a major DNA Database project, that involved interacting with dental students in clinic as well as patients-did those over multiple semesters.

Studied abroad in South Africa for a semester and volunteered 10 hours a week there. Chem TA and tutor. Member and co-founder of my college's figure skating team. Summer chemistry undergraduate research program.

Also I'm from a very rural and isolated place.

Applying to dental school is all about numbers. I like to think I had a great application two cycles ago, except for the numbers (2.9 sGPA, 3.1 cGPA, 3.8 nsGPA, 19/19/21, 16 schools, 0 interviews):

  • Vice-President of Pre-dental club
  • 2000 hrs general dentistry
  • 3000 hrs ortho (working in dentistry since I was in Gr. 10)
  • 1000+ hrs of community service
  • founder of NPO/NGO
  • top 10/division I scholarship..varsity athlete
  • 2 pre-dental mission trips to africa and central america
  • captain of 3 intramural teams
  • 2 national awards of leadership
  • 1 research publication
I know I'm no purple heart recipient, but apparently my ECs weren't enough to overcome a 2.9.

The regular academic type stuff like tutoring or advising other students were briefly acknowledged during most of my interviews, but the real conversation pieces included my time working with the Boy Scouts, my lds mission, and target shooting.
That being said, I'm under no illusion that those things got me interviews. It's stats that get you in the door at most schools.

Blarelli, please check your PM. Thanks!

I suppose every school acceptance board has a different set of "hooks" they are looking for on any given year.

In my case I was nothing over and above any of my classmates EXCEPT that I worked part-time my last two years of college as the dental coordinator for a clinic serving the indigent. Two of the docs and some of the staff there took a liking to me and sent LOR's in addition to my standard LORs.

All these years later I still feel very grateful to the staff of the Western Avenue Community Center. I learned a great deal at that place. Most of which had little to do with the direct practice of dentistry but, everything to do with getting along with and having compassion for folks from different walks of life.
