Hey all,

I'm trying to decide whether to apply to Emory.

From the website (whch is a piece of crap, btw!) it sounds like it's a very traditional curriculum -- lots of separate classes, mostly lectures. it says something about how visiting a patient at home is a super fun highlight of the year, which implies to me that there's basically no 1st year clinical experience.

But then the MSAR says, ooh, we've got interdisciplinary classes and are increasing pbl and let you see patients the first year.

Do any of you have a grasp of what their curriculum/program is really like?

Thank you.

Emory does have a traditionally curriculum. Classes are mostly taught through lectures (biochem, physio, anatomy, etc). But there is also some PBL, which starts in your first semester. Patient contact is limited in your first year. In the beginning of the first semester, all the M1 get to spend a week on the wards, where you follow doctors/residents around at the hospitals. Then you get to visit a patient in their home for a medical interview, this is done only one time. If you want more patient contact you can get involved with groups that go out and help clinics or volunteer. If you have any other questions about emory, just pm me. Good luck.

it's a pretty standard "traditional" curriculum for the first two years but they're implementing more 'contemporary' methods (ie PBL, patient visits, ward visits)...but that's pretty standard just about anywhere you go. no matter what you'll be spending your first two years stuck in a classroom learning good ole gross anatomy, biochem, neuro, physio, etc.
the big draw for emory is its clinics and hospitals - grady is ridiculous (if you dont see something there you probably wont see it. ever.) and the emory clinics/hospitals on/around campus are top-notch. if you're looking to go into cardiology or optho it's consistently ranked very highly by any and all ranking organizations.
i went there for undergrad and i have nothing but good things to say - let me know if you want to know about the social life, the campus, atlanta, etc.

I'd like to hear your thoughts on Atlanta. 🙂
