Why don't we start a thread about what people intend to do if they don't get in to med school this year. Obviously, if your determined enough you'll get in eventually I believe the key is to stay positive and not give up. I hope I get in this year but if don't I'll be applying to a SMP. I think it will be great input to find out what everyone's plan B is. There are so many options

Volunteer, work in a hospital, get a certification, EMT, SMP, maybe apply to grad school.... so many ways to reach your goal. It's great that if you don't get accepted it's not the end of the road, there's always next year and you get a whole year to look like a better candidate. So what are other people thinking about doing?

Dictator of Rome.
Lol, well in all reality I think i'm going to probably go into clinical psychology or maybe cognitive neuroscience.

If this doesn't pan out, I'll probably go for Genetic Counseling. Low pay, but I'm not really into this process for the money anyway.

Forensic or Physical Anthropology

I'm a clinical research monitor by profession. I'd probably continue in the same line of work. Every now and again I think about a career in law enforcement.

If I don't get accepted this cycle, I was looking into possibly doing a couple years abroad with the Peace Corps or some other kind of program. Then I'll reapply, because this is what I know I want 🙂

I have two midwifery programs picked out as my "plan B."

Can I ask, what is a SMP?

Drexel IMS SMP is technically a 2 year deal. If I don't get in this year with my first semester grades, there's always the next year to finish off my MS.
Not really a backup plan for me career wise, I'm going to keep trying until I get in - won't be happy anywhere else.

Special Masters Program. You basically take some of the classes with first yr med students, along with other classes, and you see how you do compared to them. If you do well, it shows med schools you can handle the cirriculum and looks great. If you do poorly, well, its not that its a complete dead end but its pretty hard to come back from that. Most people think its a last resort and very risky. Many have done it and have gotten into school successfully. You graduate with a Masters in Bio or something along that line. Its also super expensive!

Im working as a medical asst this year, and if I dont get in will just apply again, and again, and again haha...or maybe go to the carribbean if necessary, but this is what I want to do so I dont have a career back up

DO school is my back-up.

Wow right to the point buddy. There is no 100% guarantee you will even get in, even with a 4.0 and a 38MCAT.

I hope you are aware that you cant just show up DO school to be accepted, and if you think its that easy you way too cocky for your own good

My Backup: SMP program....if that didnt work I would go into nursing

To the point, but it doesn't make sense. The thread asks what would you do if you don't get into med school. 🙄

Ya apparently to this person DO school does not count as medical school:laugh:

pull the plug and reapply more broadly to neighboring state schools and do the weekend parent thing...not really ideal but if that is where they show me some non-trad love then so be it
finish my emt-b certification, possibly do my emt-p
retake the gre and apply to some direct entry nirsing masters programs to get my NP

basically go balls to the walls and know i will be somewhere doing something that will get me into the medical field the following fall!!

probably become a non-medical osteopath or even a chiro...something with manipulation therapy (not the psycho-babble kind). I would not attempt to practice some of the staple professions such as law, pharmacy, dentistry, nursing, EMT, podiatry, or psychology.

Volunteer moreso, enroll in post-bac, retake MCAT if needed, earn EMT-B and USE IT. Maybe try to sell myself on the street(as an undercover cop) and then blackmail any professors for LORS who were busted. Basically watch Starsky and Hutch, I'd be Hutch.

Join the SEALs and become a specop medic. Then put foot to ass for my country and reapply after a few tours of Afghanistan🙂

Oh damn! That's cooler than Hollywood ... I'd move to London and become a hardcore osteopath!

Go back to welding and open a fab shop again... that made good money, but at this point I can't imagine this not working.

Probably go get a MS and eventually reapply

I really hope I won't have to :xf:

Get a masters in Bio and reapply every cycle till I get in.

Unless my MCAT ends up being the factor that holds me back I can't really see not getting in this year. And if it is my MCAT, I will study and dissect this test for the next 9 months and reapply with a 36+.

Why not have the best of both worlds...an osteopath to the stars 👍

Sweet. You've got it figured out. Maybe I can get a show like Dr. 90210. Does anyone know where I can get horrible pin-striped suits and some highlights in my hair?? It seemed to work for Dr. Rey.

:laugh:I literally laughed aloud

Backups:
1) Try to become one of those science kids on Mythbusters!
2) Work for a while using my MPH, then re-apply (yes, if i get on the show med school will wait...too cool to pass up on)
3) maybe PhD (Epidemiology) but only if its fully paid for...and RE-APPLY
4) maybe Nurse Practitioner but only if im starting to get old and have kids and stuff...
5) Marry Rich!

i would consider cutting my wrist vertically or maybe law school!

I banking, right now even though I'm in good standing in a BS/DO it may manage to steal me from medicine.
