What's your Ethnicity?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
i know this is an old thread but I have a serious question.

my mother is from Venezuela (born in Caracas), and my entire grandmother's family has been there at least 200 years. however I am blonde haired, blue eyed and only speak Spanish due to learning it in school/studying abroad and it is not very good (my mother moved with her family to the US in the 50's when everyone was expected to assimilate into the US and not really keep their old ethnicity so my grandmother never spoke spanish at home with her kids).

I always feel odd checking latino/hispanic, so I rarely do (if I do it is "other") and usually just stick with white. however this always makes me feel upset because its like I have to not acknowledge an entire portion of my family tree because people would be like "yeah but you really aren't latino." what would be an appropriate thing to do in this sort of situation.

also this is why I hate ethnicity/race questions on demographics

Hispanic isn't a race as much as it is a geographic identity (kinda like Arabs). White hispanic is a thing. Just put down hispanic; or, you can put down other.

yeah but the problem is "white hispanic" is such an all inclusive term that my girlfriend (venezuelan, but very dark without having any african diaspora in her background) and I would technically both be white Hispanics, but in no way do we look or have any of the same experiences. hence why these classification systems suck

Maybe she has indigenous blood in her. Having the same experiences is irrelevant.

I can see this thread getting very nasty..I'm first generation Ghanaian

Can't imagine many people would know this even just by meeting you 😕

Haha well whenever I introduce myself to someone they are always a little taken back/confused by my name since I don't look Arab at all. That's usually when I tell them about my background.

Actually just had a conversation about my name earlier today... It happens all the time.

Oh you'd love how I "turned out". With a dad who is Scotish and Irish (many generations ago I suspect) and a mother from Mexico, I do not look the least bit Hispanic. I've got wild red hair. Red, red hair, nothing starwberry about it. My eyes, however, are brown. When I show up for any type of "diversity" event, a whole lot of people look at me and wonder if I'm just trying to get that URM designation.

I've met about 8 Mexicans who were naturally red-headed. This (obviously) comes from Mexico's European ancestry which is approximately 50% nationwide. Nothing bugs me more than the notion of a single racial classification being assigned unde the Hispanic label. You can be a white hispanic, black hispanic, asian Hispanic etc.

That being said, I am a mixed race Mexican-American. Racially, I am 60% European and 40% Native American.

Yea, I would consider you Hispanic regardless of what you look like. Not all Hispanic people have dark skin and hair. I have two Mexican friends who are very pale. One has red hair the other has light brown hair. Haha, my European friend is much tanner than they are and has dark brown hair.

Was expecting more Southeast Asian/Pacific Islander folks to post.

But then I read through the thread, and felt awkward about a lot of the comments.

+ Yay for revived threads? 😛

I also get that sometimes...people being like "you don't look Arab"...and I say "yeah, some of us look like this".

Agreed. I don't understand why the blond Venezuelan doesn't feel like he can put that down. You're Venezuelan...there are other blond Venezuelans...there are blonde Brazilians...and tons of blond Argentines...

Thanks Jennyfishy. I got an infraction point for reviving old threads. lol. wtf?

How much does being an URM help you get into med school?

Just 100% Vietnamese (parents), but it'd be more accurate to identify as half white Canadian and half Japanese 😉

I really could relate to some Canadian and Japanese characters/people!
