Wheee first rejection!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Rejection from Indiana, but and invitation from UoP? I wouldn't be too concerned. I'm contemplating rejecting my interview invitation from Indiana...I'll tell them to send it your way 😛

Yeah I'm not worried at all 🙄 Have you gotten interviews from other places?

Ya, they are coming out of my ears...I have 9 so far. I could go, but I feel that I don't really need to. In other words Indiana is at the bottom of my list...it will only give someone else a chance 😉

Jesus H. Christ, finchy. 9?? Congrats! I'm jelly.

And, koreano, I don't understand why they would reject you. Your stats are stellar! Oh, well, you're right. UoP ftw.

From what I've heard, some programs will reject you because you are unlikely to attend and they would rather pursue applicants more likely to enroll. I'm not sure if that is the case here, but you never know.

If an applicant has strong stats and is competitive for top programs like Harvard, UPenn, etc., a less competitive school might feel like they are wasting both of the applicant's and their time by extending an interview invite.

While this does make some sense, it would make it difficult for a very competitive applicant to have any "safety" schools if those programs aren't giving them the chance. Perhaps their "safety" schools are the equivalent of my "aim" and "reach" schools.

*shrug*

Koreano, I would actually call them and ask them why you were rejected... I remember from a thread last year someone with high stats was rejected from indiana, they called and told them they are actually really interested in Indiana. A few days later they received an interview. Not sure if it'll work for everyone. I tried looking for the thread, but couldn't find it. I just remember the admissions there really takes the time to give you advice in regards to your application (according to what I remember reading in a thread from last year)

Yeah that's what I heard too... Oh well, I most likely would not have went to Indiana anyway and I'm guessing that they sensed it too 🙂

Anywho... I just got an interview invite from Nova... pretty stoked.

Koreano, this whole cycle has been VERY weird in my opinion. I've been reading the interview threads. Have you seen some of the people who were rejected from UCSF? Some of them had 3.9 and 22+ DATs and excellent extracurriculars. Chances are, these people do well academically and probably have great letters and personal statement as well. In my opinion, on paper, these were candidates who were creme de la creme really. Then I saw people with 3.4s and 19/20s getting interviews at UCSF.

In my own instance - I was invited to Buffalo (public school) pretty early on as an OOS yet rejected from Midwestern IL, a new and private institution with much lower requirements. I actually didn't think I had ANY chance with Buffalo because they're selective on OOS applicants and don't accept very many, whereas Midwestern IL supposedly gives fair chance to anyone in state or OOS.

Bottom line is that I am no longer certain about what the "criteria" for an applicant they go by. It's all a big question mark. But seeing your stats, I am sure you should be saving up for travel costs. Many interviews will be coming your way pretty soon. 🙂

Just got my first rejection from Indiana 🙂 Granted, Indiana was nowhere near the top of my list but I didn't think I would get a rejection this early... Oh well. Good thing I applied to 17 schools.

Four interviews: I was surprised to get invite from Pitt, but rejected by LECOM, go figure

I've heard it so many times...applying to dental school is a crapshoot.

So if a person had high stats and applied to schools like UCLA, Columbia, or UoP, they may possibly be rejected from their own state schools? Because I'd rather pay cheaper tuition and go to a good state school than pay for an expensive top school, but if they rejected me because they thought I'd go to a top school..... D:

Apparently the feeling was mutual.

Yes, state schools are going to reject you because you have extremely high "stats", and you're gona have no choice but to go to harvard. Tough luck.

Hey, I don't think Laura was trying to be in any way conceited or snobby in saying this. I'm in the same boat--I'd MUCH rather pay in-state tuition than 100 grand a year for Harvard or UPenn or Columbia, even though my DAT and GPA may put me in a position to be accepted at such schools. It's not all about prestige. For some of us, money is a real factor!

I'm glad you're not in my cycle!

Sorry, I probably should have worded that better; I did not mean to come off as being snobby or anything. I do think I am pretty competitive, but I would never go as far as to say "extremely high stats" or anything to that extent. Thanks for that though... haha

👍

Yeah, I just want to pay off my debt asap when I get out of DS, and I feel that the majority of DS's will make you a competent/excellent GP. If I wanted to specialize, I can do that from any school--even if I may have to work harder at some schools than others.

Excuse me. Go back and read some of doc toothache's contributions to this forum. It's a hell of a lot more than some whiney little puke obsessing about his one interview. You made a stupid comment about a school and he turned it around on you. Boo-hoo for you.

Someone's a little cranky this morning 😀

'Obsessing about one interview'... I'm guessing you're referring to my interview to UoP. Lol you jelly? Besides from the UoP interview thread, I rarely talk about it unless someone brings it up. Judging from your angry posts on SDN which you seem to delete after a few hours, I'm guessing that you aren't doing so hot this cycle. That, or you have a massive internet tourette syndrome. And lol who the hell made you the grammar / spelling police of SDN?

Doctoothache has done alot for this forum... Ok im not gonna dispute that fact, he has indeed provided a lot of useful info in the past. But so what? There are numerous members on this forum who have contributed much over the years but you don't see them going around other people's threads dropping one liners. Though I gotta admit what he said above is pretty funny, made me chuckle.

Yeah I guess we just gotta wait it out and see what happens. I didn't apply to Buffalo because I'm not a NY resident so I thought I would have no chance of getting in... That's awesome that you got an interview from there though, rock the interview and I'm sure you will be in! 😀

The interview system is a crapshoot.

They probably post our apps on their walls and throw darts at them while blindfolded, and invite those that they hit for interviews 😉

Solution: Send in secondaries filled out on legal-sized paper. More surface area = better shot. It's math! 😀
