do they automatically assume that that is the area where you'd want to match? Do you get filtered out this way for interviews by programs in other parts of the country?

Maybe, but probably not. Hard to tell. Different programs are likely to interpret it differently. Maybe you just had a family/friend in that area to live with.
Regardless, there's nothing you can do about it. Apply and see what happens.
