So, for everyone not going to a college in their current town of residence, when are you guys moving? I'm going to be moving to Knoxville (from NC), and I'm trying to decide how early to move. I want to work as late into the summer as I can, to amass some sort of savings, but I also want plenty of time to acclimate myself to the area, and settle in and such. I was thinking maybe the week right before orientation (UTK starts on a sat/sunday, so move on wed/tues?). What is everyone else planning?

Im moving from NY to Ohio three weeks early so I have time to set up house, get to know the area, properly shop for EVERYTHING and really have time to get comfortable there.

I'm probably going at least 3 weeks early as well, to set up the house, get the dog used to having a real backyard, and things like that. It's a 3 day drive out, and I think my father will stay for a week, and I really need at least two weeks on my own to get everything situated 🙂

I may even end up going 4-5 weeks early and just relaxing. I've been losing hours at work, and can barely pay my rent now. At least at school, my rent will be a lot cheaper 🙂

My parents bought me a house today in Starkville, MS!!!! I'm so excited! Since school starts July 1st I suppose i'll be down there a week or so before but as soon as the inspection goes through and everything i'll go to the house a couple of times and try to start setting up!

Lucky. Mine are insisting I rent for a year before I even think about buying, even though in the long run, I feel like buying is a heck of a lot easier than renting a house. I don't even know if it's really worth it to buy a house for 3 years, not the full four.

Congrats!

My lease starts 8/1, so I plan to move right around that time. My fiance and I will be "long-distance" for at least the first year (him = staying in Wyoming, working on PhD, me = moving to Iowa), so he is helping me move, staying a week or so, heading home to visit his family (Illinois), and then swinging back through Iowa for my White Coat Ceremony.

I want to spend as much time with him AS POSSIBLE this summer, but I also know that it will take me a while to settle in. I think orientation at ISU is the 18th-20th, so that will give me a week in Ames with my SO and then a brutal week of "hey, I better get used to this" before the White Coat Ceremony and school starts. (Personally, I will need time to adjust, and I don't want be in the midst of adjusting while I'm studying for my first quiz, or what-have-you).

But, I won't be working at all beginning in July (just the "terms" of my job). So I don't have much of an option for working/saving until the end of summer, unless I try to pick up a new job now. Which I don't plan to do. I'm going to try to enjoy this summer with my SO.

So, in short, I'm moving the first week of August. (Sorry for all of the details).

Well my parents don't want to throw money down the drain in rent like they did for the past 4 years. They're hoping to get their money back out of it when I graduate. I'm so excited! I plan on having a bbq or something for all the vet students in my class when school starts

something must be wrong with me lol i'm planning on moving july 1st so that i have 1.5 months to get to know the area, organize my place, settle my cat in..etc lol this is so much earlier than everyone else. but i'm really looking forward to living in philly and it will be a nice move from dc to there. If i were going to blacksburg, va i would probably wait until 3 weeks before class starts lol

Mom wants to move me in the first of August, but I would much rather stay in MD and work and make money (and go horseback riding more). So I think the compromise will be around August 7th - and orientation starts August 17th. I don't really need a lot of time to get adjusted, i've moved so many times I'm used to it and adapt fast.

I wouldn't for three. risky enough at four. however, houses are often more work than folks realize (have seen that with a lot of first time homeowners here.)

Then again, post 18 I never had financial assistance from parents....so my view might be different!

Yeah I figured I'd be in the house for 5 years because of an internship. Also the HOA mows the lawn and does maintenance so the house i'm getting isn't as much responsibility as most houses

Something must be wrong with ME! I'm probably moving into my apartment the day Orientation starts (Sept 1st), and staying in a hotel only the two or three days prior. While I'm an IS student, L.A. is ~6.5 hours from Davis and I've only been there once for my interview . . . Hopefully the adjustment period of living in a non-family home/non-dorm room for the first time won't be too bad 😳

I am gonna move in August 1st or very close to it. I have a paying job this summer (THANK GOODNESS) and I am trying to spend as much time with my boyfriend, who may or may not be moving with me, and fooling around with my horse, who I will be shipping out, hence the delight at a paying job. 🙂

Fun times. If I could move later, I would. I am pumped to start but DREADING dragging all my stuff out there

Your horse is coming? You might just be my new bestest friend forever 😛

Mizzou is only a couple hours from my house so I'll probably get my stuff all moved in around Aug 1st (when my lease starts) but won't actually move there with the dogs until a day or two before orientation starts. My last day of work is a week prior to the start date for orientation so I'll need to stick around the area. We moved over 15 times when I was a kid so relocations are no big deal for me. Especially since this one is so close to home anyway.

HECK yes he is coming... 🙂 We can have parties poking and prodding him for anatomy and physiology!

I'll probably be moving sometime during the first week of August. It depends where my roommate and I end up renting because some places won't be available till August 10th.

I can't imagine moving the day before! I want time to buy some new furniture, make sure all of my utilities work, and get my animals (2 cats, 1 dog) adjusted. So I'm hoping for at least a week.

Amen to that. But still, it is kind of like giving birth.... somehow you forget all the bad parts and just remember the positive stuff.

I must be insane to be moving into 120+ year old house, so I am obviously suffering from selective amnesia.

Wow, yes, that sounds like quite the project.

I know you didn't ask people who are still finishing college, but I'm answering anyway. 😀

It's hard to pick a specific "moving" date for me. I am leaving home around the 1st of July and driving (slowly!) across the country by myself with just a couple suitcases of stuff (and extra oil, coolant, etc). I have about half a dozen friends and relatives that I am going to visit along the way, and I'm planning to schedule myself for one day of hard-core (6-9h) driving at a time with a day or two in between to see the area and relax. In the middle of this, I am stopping in ND to do a RAVS trip July 12 to July 19. My penultimate destination will be Seattle, where my awesome uncle and his wife have a house overlooking Puget Sound. I'll hang out with them for a while and drive down the coast, ending up in Davis around the beginning of August. Orientation starts Sept 1.

Once I'm there, my parents will ship some stuff like my books, and I'll look around for some used furniture. I haven't entirely figured out whether I'm going to fly back to get my cat or find a way for my parents to load her on an airplane and have me meet her at the Sacramento airport (direct flights only!). If I have time/energy left after setting up house, getting the cat settled, switching all of my documentation (driver's license, etc.), and finding my way around Davis, I plan to see some of the sights and do some hiking. Other than my interviews, I've never been to the west, ever, so there will be lots of places to see and new bird species to learn.

OK, so I'm just a little excited. 😉

luplodw- your house looks very nice! I'm still on the waiting list for Mississippi, but I haven't heard anything recently. I'm getting a little nervous.

I'm planning on getting out there a week before orientation, which sounded fine to me until I read this thread and saw all your super-early plans. XD Oh well. Not changing my departure date by a few weeks now, I already made somewhat-plans to leave here the week of the 9th.

Well thanks vdrandal!! I'm excited about it!

I really hope you get in! I'd love to be classmates with you. Good luck!

I'm going to try to move 4-6 weeks before classes start in August. I figure that will give us time to get settled, learn our way around town, buy hubby a new vehicle, and hit up the beach and amusement parks before classes start.

Jeez, reading about all of you guys having to make all of these plans and do all of this moving really makes me appreciate that I don't have to. 😀

Please, I'm glad to get outta here! I'm moving ASAP, June 1. So long, Michigan! Don't wait up for me, 'cause I ain't comin' back!

As you can see, I'm so eager that my location has already moved to Minnesota ahead of me.

You should meet up with Parietal and I when you get here! 🙂

I'm flying to London on September 10th overnight to be there for the start of the pre-sessional course (4 year program). HOPEFULLY the ash doesn't prevent this, because otherwise I'm cruising over on August 8th. :/

Trust me, I will! Most of my roomies are going home for the summer, or so I hear. I'm gonna need some friends to explore with!

I'm planning to do some apt/room shopping towards the end of May into June then leave Las Vegas Aug. 1st. It should be a 2 day drive to CSU and then I'll be there 2 weeks before orientation starts on the 16th. I would love to get there earlier, but I have a great stable job and want to spend as much time with my boyfriend as possible before leaving. 2 weeks should be just fine in terms of adjustment for me since I really don't have a whole lot to move and I've done the whole moving to a new are with no friends before.

We just spent another house hunting in Madison. With the home owners credit, places are going fast, not many affordable options. Our current house sold right away, so I guess we're moving somewhere by the end of May. Houses area lot of work, but it's tough to live by a landlord's rules again. Plus with our entire brood it would still cost a fortune to rent, even if we could find a place that would take them all.

So, in short, I guess we're moving as soon as we can. Plus, Madison rocks in summer, might as well enjoy it while I can!

Ugh gotta get my stuff figured out. Why's everything always gotta be complicated?!

Bump...

Thought it would be fun to see now who is moved or not now that classes are starting up soon (or started!)

I'm hitting the long, long road on Monday.

August 28th!!! We don't start at Ohio till the 19th (for orientation), so I won't have moved till almost everyone here has already started class. Oh well, STILL PUMPED!

Officially moving in July 24th-25th!!

Of course I'll still have to be up and down to Jersey for the next week but after July 28th it's Philly all the way!!!

Moving in two weeks. It'll be the same town I lived in for undergrad so there's really nothing new to explore or anything (sadly). I figure I'll be going back to the places I enjoyed while in undergrad during my off time til school starts.

I've got 8 weeks left til I move to London. Still have a lot of stuff to get together before then!

same. my lease on my house starts aug 1st but i doubt i'll move up that early since my job is here at home and we don't have orientation til the last weekend in august. i'm only an hour from there right now though, so i've been going up there once every two-three weeks to hang out with friends and slowly start moving stuff in...i'm anxious to start already!

Moving to Ames August 7th! So psyched. Any other ISU'ers going to be in town? I'm going to need someone to go to that BBQ place with.

Getting on the plane and flying over the Pole from Alaska to Edinburgh on Tuesday. Boy, is this ever going to be a change. I am super excited, though. I wish everyone of you the best in your travels and your new adventures! 🙂

I might be around! I'm moving on the 1st (so I'm freaked out that you are so far ahead of me in packing!) and stopping to see my parents in Chicago sometime after that. Anyways, I'm guessing that I'll be back in Ames early in the second week of August. And another of our classmates (who shall remain anonymous--so that I don't share her personal info/username) is moving the 11th (?). We could do a group dinner if you can wait a few days! 🙂

I'm arriving in Ames on August 1st! ....and then leaving on the 4th and coming back on the 14th lol. I have a complicated moving process but I'll be there for good starting on the 14th if anythings going on!

I'm moving on the 12th and should get to Fort Collins by the 14th. Taking my bf to the airport to say bye bye on the 15th . Orientation starts on the 16th!!!

Leaving home on August 1st and arriving in Baton Rouge on August 3rd. Pod with my furniture and stuff arrives on the 4th. Orientation starts on the 13th but according to my second-year roommate, there was some pre-orientation stuff last year, so hopefully I will get to meet and have fun with some of my class early.

Man I still want to go to Hickory Park. Didn't get to go last time as the wait was 2 hours long. I have it saved in my GPS unit so if I ever wake up and I'm in Ames (and have my GPS evidently), I'll know where to go. It better live up to the hype lol.

Making the migration out to Columbia from Maryland starting Aug. 7th, arriving the 9th. I come back from Scotland July 29th, so i have about one week to get my life together for the move. Fortunately, my life can just about fit into my hiking backpack.

I was going to try and be moved out to Kansas for good by 8/1, but now I think I'll delay another week and hit the road maybe 8/2 and try to be in Manhattan by 8/6. Orientation starts 8/18, and as much as I want to get out there and get started, I love my life here and hesitate to let go of it. I'm staying at my friend's beautiful "country estate" surrounded by avocado trees, tons of land for the animals to roam around on (their dogs + my dogs = 7 slobbery beasts, plus 8 cats bouncing off the walls), and I'm making good money at my old job. Who knows when I'll have a paycheck again once school starts? Plus, it's like 110 friggin' degrees in KS, and I am NOT looking forward to that!

But, I am in a little better position than most, I've kind of been working this move all summer. I closed on the house in June, already moved about 95% of my stuff, and spent a couple weeks out there getting stuff set up. So at this point it's pretty much just the dogs and my last little bit of stuff I need to fit in the car and haul out there. I just want to have a good couple weeks to get the dogs settled in and find things to do around town. So anyone arriving in the Little Apple the week before orientation, hit me up and we can do a BBQ or something.

Moving up to Davis on the 23rd of August, but the lease technically starts on the 10th. While this is kinda far away it feels so close! Cleaned out my closet and dresser today in anticipation.

I have also made scale graph paper models of my room and cut out furniture (to scale) so I can figure out where everything is going to go. Boyfriend found this hilarious, but I don't care I'm going to vet school!
