When are you moving?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Well, orientation at Tennessee starts on the 13th so I'm leaving my house on the 11th and should be moving into my apartment in Knoxville on the 12th of August, which is 3 days earlier than the apartment complex lets people move in but 12 days after my lease starts (I definietly don't understand how this works, maybe it's a Tennessee thing). I must be the only person who is putting off moving to the absolutely last second possible because I refuse to leave my dogs earlier than I have to (plus I'm going to starve on my own so I'm going to stay at home as long as possible and have my mom cook as much as possible for me).

I definitely hear that about starving. I've decided on August 7th (assuming i get the apartment I want- yes, I know, I kinda slacked and put it off until the last minute, should know by mid next week). That way, I've got roughly a week to explore the area and acclimate myself.

I have also made scale graph paper models of my room and cut out furniture (to scale) so I can figure out where everything is going to go. Boyfriend found this hilarious, but I don't care I'm going to vet school!

I have to agree with your boyfriend, that's hilarious.

As for my travel plans, I should be flying south in two weeks, thankfully. I haven't quite pinned down a date that I want to move down, but I'd like maybe a week or so to get settled in before orientation starts on the 13th. Have some time to set the trailer up.

I want it to happen now! 😀

Don't feel bad, I did the same thing but on the computer instead. Yours makes you creative; mine makes me a nerd.

Definitely have done that. In fact, have saved the "furniture" through a few moves so I just have to draw a new layout on graph paper to see where stuff goes. Learned it from an interior decorator friend.

Or you could look at it as you are tech savvy whereas I'm computer illiterate. Whichever you prefer.

And Startingovervet, that is a great idea about keeping the furniture! Definitely going to steal that one.

Something must be wrong with ME! I'm probably moving into my apartment the day Orientation starts (Sept 1st), and staying in a hotel only the two or three days prior. While I'm an IS student, L.A. is ~6.5 hours from Davis and I've only been there once for my interview . . . Hopefully the adjustment period of living in a non-family home/non-dorm room for the first time won't be too bad 😳

Davis is great, but a couple of things to be prepared for- ESPECIALLY if you've been living in LA. The city of Davis DOESN'T allow large chain stores within city limits, so the closest stores like Target/Walmart/etc are in the next towns over - Woodland and Dixon. Davis itself has a couple smaller stores, but they tend to be pricey. Woodland has "a mall" but its very sad by normal standards. Sacramento has a few nicer malls including the outdoor mall, but its at least a 30 minute drive to get to them.

Also, the closest towns are about 10 miles apart and there's NOTHING in between. Like, literally. There are fields and a couple houses, but not the same sort of surface streets you're used to! Parking on campus is kind of a headache, though I think the vet school has decent parking available to students. Its just that most of the campus has parking on the periphery and requires you to walk the rest of the way in. It was awesome when you had class in one building on one side of campus, and the next class all the way on the other side of campus with only a 10 minute window to get there...Bike or bust!

You might already know all this...I just figured I'd give you a heads up in case you don't so you can plan for it! Davis is really nice, just a little inconvenient for everyday inexpensive needs.

Oh...And get some Jasmine/lime iced tea from Peet's if you can 🙂

Tobysgirl81 - actually, there is a new-ish Target in Davis. It was a long time coming, but it is so convenient to have it. It has a full grocery store and a Starbucks inside! And while we don't have a Walmart or Costco or that stuff, you can find most everything you need to live on in town and it's really not that pricey.

West Sacramento is very close, just over the causeway, and there's a huge mall with an Ikea, Walmart, etc. Vacaville outlets aren't too far and you can find all your major clothes stores, Home Depot, Costco, etc. I think we get the best of both worlds because we don't have tons of people coming into town to do their shopping, but we have everything we could need within easy reach.

I'm moving to Davis August 16th, but my lease doesn't start until September 5th. I have a house to stay in until then, and the 6th is a holiday, so I'll have 2 days to move in. I think the hardest part will be getting my mattress up the stairs, I live on the 3rd floor and there's no elevator. I have no clue how my roommate and I will be getting furniture up there - hire some strong college guys?

Wow...They let Target in? I thought they'd blocked pretty much EVERYONE from setting up there. They did need it though.

I just remember it being a HUGE shock to me (since I grew up in Orange County) that there wasn't a convenient shopping center on every corner and everything you needed within walking distance of where you lived 🙂 It sounds crazy, but when you're used to driving 10 minutes down the road and passing 5 strip malls filled with whatever you need, its hard to switch to a place where the closest town is 15 minutes away through country roads. I lived around Davis until about 2 years ago when I transplanted cross country.

And no, its not ALL pricey, but the smaller clothing stores are definitely NOT student budget friendly (and neither is Rite Aid quite frankly). I just remember LEAVING the city everytime I needed to purchase something because it made more sense to spend a little money in gas than spend HUGE money to stay in town.

You're gonna have to let me know how much time it takes you to explore Knoxville and the area. I'm pretty much only giving myself the sunday before classes start to explore Knoxville and I just wanna know if I'm really going to be in trouble by not giving myself enough time to get used to everything.

I'm just catching up on this thread now, and I wanted to say that I did this exact same thing about 1.5 months ago!!!

Moving to Ames August 7th! So psyched. Any other ISU'ers going to be in town? I'm going to need someone to go to that BBQ place with.

I was going to move on the 7th but doubt my place will be ready by then so probably more likely the 14th. I will be in Ames that weekend though if you want to do dinner/lunch.
I am completely remodeling my trailer and it is a CHORE.

I am actually in ames every weekend if anyone moves early and wants to meet up!

moving to Michigan August 2...and driving with 2 dogs and 2 cats from CA. Let's see how long my sanity will last 😉

Ha, I feel your pain! I'll be driving a similar route/distance from San Diego to Kansas, but with three big dogs and (fortunately) no cats. Never done a road trip of more than a couple hours with the dogs, and that was back when I only had two. This will be at least 24 hours in the car, but I plan to break it up into three nights/four days, probably only doing about 400 miles a day. I'll be Googling for dog parks along the way, and plan to stop at least every two hours to let them stretch. And they'll all be getting a little Benadryl/Bonine cocktail before hitting the road each day, so hopefully that will help them mellow out enough to just relax and enjoy the adventure. And of course not drive daddy crazy!

Nienna, we'll see how much I actually find. Exploring will probably involve the zoo, a grocery store or two, quick day trip to the mountains, a coupla city parks, and other similar, not that helpful, trips. I bet the in-staters (and maybe a few that already went to UTK for undergrad?) will be able to guide us during orientation.

I'm definitely down for meeting up. I'm living in a trailer too. Just PM me whenever. I think that my parents are leaving either the 8th or 9th, so if not that weekend then the next. Maybe we can get a group together or something.

A helpful hint - pretty much anything you need to find is on Kingston Pike. Which is parallel to I-40.

Moving up to Davis on the 23rd of August, but the lease technically starts on the 10th. While this is kinda far away it feels so close! Cleaned out my closet and dresser today in anticipation.

where are you staying until your lease starts? I'm in a similar situation and need to find a place soon🙁

In the middle of my Los Angeles to Philadelphia move right now with 2 dogs and 1 cat and 1 wife. Learned an important lesson for the future: Don't drive through the desert in the middle of the summer in the middle of the day in the middle of a heat wave. The temperature gauge on the engine kept on getting dangerously hot. That meant slowing down or lowering the a/c or both.

The dogs have been fine, but the cat who is usually a good traveller has not been happy. She hissed at me for the first time when I tried to put her back in her carrier. Not a good sign and I am only in Colorado. Lots of miles to go.

Anyway, free wi-fi is a godsend! Whoeee.

Good luck on your moves.
SOV.

SOV, have you been finding pet-friendly motels? I haven't started making reservations yet, but I've heard most Motel 6's take pets, sometimes with no additional charge. Since they are usually cheap, clean, and seem to be in just about every medium or bigger town, I'm probably going to start with them. Already started Googling for dog parks along the way, but I'll have to make a big organized list in order of my route.

On an unrelated note, been meaning to ask you for awhile based on that avatar, are you a pilot? Multi-engine?

Well I probably should have been more clear, the lease starts on the 10th of August but I can't move up right away because of work. However it was supposed to start on 9/7, but my roommates talked to the property manager and we were able to get an earlier date. So I guess you could try just talking to whoever you are renting from and see if they can work with you at all so you can get in earlier.

I know I didn't want to move in a week after orientation started, so good luck with your current place/finding a place to crash:luck:

Also try Comfort Inn. EconoLodge also but not as nice. Each one has different prices and rules regarding maximum size or number of pets. Look them up on the Choice Hotels website.

Red Roof also takes pets. I think it is only one pet per room, but you can check with them to be sure. I am traveling with my dog and my rabbit and will just sneak the rabbit in. You could probably get away with sneaking a cat in too. Just make sure you decline any housekeeping. 🙂 Some La Quinta Inns are pet friendly too, just have to check each individual one.

You can also check out http://www.bringfido.com/ They list hotels, restaurants and dog parks. I would double check with the place you want to go though, in case their policies have changed.

not sure if it's been mentioned already b/c i just read the last 2 posts, but i have been using dogfriendly.com. i've found that a lot of best western's allow dogs as well. i called one hotel to confirm their policy, and will be calling again the day i'm traveling to make sure the person working the desk at that time says the same thing. 😀 i've never traveled with my dog so this will be a first, and interesting, experience.

Ooooh, I see. I totally misunderstood! Anyway, it seems like lots of places in Davis have move-in dates a few days into September, which sucks for some us first-years. The current tenants in my unit are moving out on august 31 and the extra days are used to get the apt ready, I guess. Sigh. Anyway, thanks!!

The current tenants of my unit are also moving out August 31, but I can move in on September 1st at 5:00 PM at the earliest. My parents are going to help me out a lot while I'm at Orientation (and I'll be staying in a hotel with them for the first few nights in Davis up through either the 1st or 2nd of Sept.), but I'm still feeling pretty stressed about the situation.

I know this is a bit late, but I want to chime in with a big 👍 for Davis...
I did my undergrad here and honestly couldn't wait to move out of this tiny little town. But then I ended up staying because I got offered a good work position in a lab (and found a sweetie of a boyfriend, soon to be husband in 23 days!), and my perspective on the town totally changed!
It is definitely small, and if you want anything big or exciting you need to drive to Sacramento, which is an easy 15 minutes away. But pretty much everything you need is in town... we have great restaurants, multiple movie theaters, a farmer's market, great running/biking trails all through town, awesome energy with all the academics and crazy college students, and to top it off, it is a beautiful little town 🙂
Don't get me wrong, in y 4 years I am very excited to tackle a city that is a bit larger, but Davis is a great place to spend the next few years 😀

I did not plan any of the trip figuring I would never be sure exactly how much I would drive each day. I have relied exclusively on AAA tour guides and trip tiks for information. They list all the motels that pass their standards (no roach motels) and whether they allow pets and if they charge fees or not. Tonight is first time I got hit with a fee (although guide said no fee). Generally there is one place to stay almost everywhere (i have travelled mostly on I-15 and I-70). My favorite is always LaQuinta. They are pretty consistent, have free internet(usually), free breakfast and no dog fee, but I have stayed at a couple of places I never heard of but got 3 diamonds (I won't stay in a 1 diamond). To be honest, I can't remember the names of places already (I am fried).

Also, you can sneak into just about any motel in an emergency. Usually most motels have side entrances and nobody is around at night. Now, I am not saying I have ever done this, or that I recommend it, but if you have a quiet pet then who am I to say don't try it. 😀

As for the avatar, since you asked my qualifications are:
single or multi-engine land airplane - instrument - commercial pilot and flight instructor.... and helicopter private pilot.

My passion for flying matches my passion for animals. And very similar careers... lots and lots of training for a pittance of a salary (to start anyway... flight instructors and entry level commercial pilots earn below the poverty level).

Btw, it is great fun passing by all the vet schools on the road I am not attending. All I can think is "if I were going 'here' I would be there already!).

Sorry for the long post. Good luck. You can always PM me with specific questions....

The...west? I've never heard of the west and 'beautiful' used in the same sentence. Just long stretches of highway with nothing but desert around you until you get to the west coast was my impression.

Course, I also thought Kansas was flat and that's far from the truth, at least in the eastern part of it. But, maybe as you go west.... 😀

New Mexico has some beautiful parts, but Utah definitely qualifies.

Dang, you'll be one of the most well-rounded vets out there, with an awesome back-up career and everything. I've got my private license, single-engine land and sea. Love it, but always just been an expensive hobby for me, and with all the vet experience and pre-reqs I had to complete the past few years (along with drastically reduced income), it was a long time since I've flown at all. One of my goals this summer, before things get all crazy with school, was to finally get current again. So I got my medical renewed and just completed my flight review couple weeks ago. Felt pretty good, it all came back to me, and instructor was amazed I hadn't flown in five years. 😀 KSU has a flight club at the little Manhattan airport, so I hope to be able to hook up with that and at least stay somewhat proficient during school. Love to try helicopter someday, maybe if I ever win the lottery - what is it, like $200/hr for an R22?

Seems like a lot of vets also fly, well relative to the general population anyway. Of the fairly small number of vets I've worked with, I can think of at least five who are pilots.

When are you moving??

TOMORROW!!!!!!!

I'm getting excited. Not for the move itself but this upcoming week should be interesting!

Congrats on getting current. Actually, after coming back from living overseas I got the helicopter rating to get back into flying. And, yes, it is expensive (I flew a Schweiter about 155 hour 10 yrs ago!). I would love to own a helicopter one day. They are so much fun and so impractical and expensive for "normal" people.

And now back to the topic....

GeeBee - Good luck on the move.

Oh, by the way, got to Philly last night. Oh my, it is humid here. And I totally forgot about the bugs in the summer. When does the fun and exciting stuff start?

I guess it is all relative... Certainly have no love for Nevada.

Colorado was gorgeous. Utah was beautiful. Even Arizona was interesting in the parts we drove through (and others such as Sedona etc are also nice). Personally Kansas was more interesting than a lot of "eastern" states. Rolling prairie is a bit different than what I have lived in and I was expecting land so flat you could see one end to the other so it was a pleasant surprise.

No offense to anyone but I couldn't wait to leave Indiana. Couldn't stand the drivers, couldn't stand the police, or the signs, or the lack of interesting scenery. Just couldn't stand it. Wasn't too thrilled with Missouri either. I am sure they are nice states away from I-70 but as far as driving goes, my advice is go around them.

I also never travelled through W. Pennsylvania before and it is pretty nice.

I feel your pain. Are you bringing any pets?

I could have sworn I responded to this already, but I can't seem to find my post . . . I'm not brining any pets (probably unusual for a vet student - but definitely makes things easier). My roommate (a second-year vet student) has two young cats, though, so I'll just borrow hers 🙄

moving to Michigan in one week...a little nervous about living with my bf for the first time...any advice on how to live together without killing each other is welcome 😉

awesome! I think some of us on the msu cvm 2014 fb page are going to try to all meet up mid-august too-- so excited to start vet school!!!

Box with my furniture and most of my stuff was picked up from my house today. Will meet it in Baton Rouge on the 4th. 3 cats and 1 bunny have boarding reservations. Hotel and rental car reservations made. Everything is falling into place. It's really happening….:scared:😀

I move to Woodland (aka Davis area) on Sunday with one boyfriend, (haha as if there would be more (; ), a small/medium dog, a cat, and a few chickens.

Thankfully its only a 3 hour drive so I've got it pretty easy compared to some of you!!
