Doesn't matter. Being geographically as close as possible to a med school won't increase your chances of getting in, even if you went to school on their front porch. 😛
Not necessarily. Some med schools favor commitment to the region, especially if rural or medically underserved, so if you go to college in the area and demonstrate service and heavy involvement in the community, that could definitely work to your advantage.
